Sourcing servo motor feedback cables from China

Approve the cable on your exact motor, encoder and drive while the axis moves. Make pin-to-pin wiring, shield termination and the movement test contractual: a continuity pass alone is insufficient acceptance evidence. For qualifying connector-fitted assemblies under 8544429090, budget 2% duty and 20% import VAT.

Start with the feedback circuit, not the connector shell

Send the supplier the motor, encoder and drive part numbers, their connection drawings and the original cable reference. Require a pin-to-pin drawing showing connector viewing direction, supply and return, signal pairs, shield connections and any battery-box wiring. Approve that drawing before approving a sample.

Beckhoff's EL7411 documentation specifies shielded feedback cable and recommends twisting the respective cores for differential signals. Translate your equipment manufacturer's instructions into the purchase specification; do not let the assembler choose pair allocation or shield termination from appearance.

Keep feedback and power requirements separate when comparing quotations. Our guides to industrial servo motors and servo drives help assemble the equipment information the cable maker needs.

Where to look: Dongguan production leads and Shanghai meetings

Dongguan offers a concrete lead for a supplier search. Dongguan Xunchi Industrial lists encoder cable and identifies its factory in Dongcheng District. This is a supplier-published production lead, not an independent factory endorsement or proof that every operation is performed there.

When assessing suppliers, distinguish an assembly supplier from a cable producer. Ask who draws or buys the conductors, makes the screened cable, crimps or solders the contacts, moulds the connector exits and performs final electrical testing. Request evidence for the operations that matter to your drawing.

The Industrial Automation Show at the National Exhibition and Convention Center Shanghai is another named meeting point. Arrange technical meetings around your drawing and sample requirements; attendance is not evidence of encoder compatibility. For wider supplier comparisons, see the electrical cable and wire harness guide.

Write acceptance tests around the ways this cable can fail

Wiring: require every finished assembly to pass the approved connection map and an unintended-short check. Inspect connector keying, contact seating, locking and cable exit against the approved sample. Set resistance and insulation-test limits from the connector, cable and equipment specifications rather than accepting a generic test-sheet heading.

Shielding: open a sacrificial sample to check the actual twisted pairs, screen construction and termination against the drawing. Beckhoff describes the feedback shield connection through the metallic connector fastening on its EL7411 installation. Follow the instructions for your particular equipment rather than adopting a universal one-end or two-end grounding rule.

Movement: Xunchi identifies over-bending, abrasion, environmental damage and installation tension or kinking as flexible-cable failure causes. Specify the intended carrier arrangement, bend radius, travel, speed, acceleration, temperature, oil exposure and torsion. Agree the test duration and pass criteria before ordering; a claim of 'high flex' is not an acceptance method.

For sample qualification, monitor feedback and drive fault records during the agreed movement test, then repeat the electrical checks. Record the tested length, cable construction and connector references. Treat substitutions as a new approval decision. Use the inspection guide to turn these requirements into shipment records.

Use standards for the claim they actually test

IEC 60512-2-1:2002 provides a method for measuring resistance across mated connector contacts. Use it where appropriate when agreeing contact-resistance testing; specify the acceptance limit separately.

IEC 60332-1-2:2025 addresses vertical flame propagation on a single cable. A report to that standard does not establish encoder performance or moving-axis endurance. Require a report that identifies the supplied cable construction and the tested edition.

IEC 60204-1:2016 covers electrical equipment of machinery. Ask the machine integrator to identify the applicable edition and installation requirements for the replacement cable. These standards address different questions; none replaces an approved wiring drawing and functional sample test.

UK compliance: establish scope before requesting a mark

For Great Britain, the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 cover equipment designed or adapted for use at 50–1,000 volts AC or 75–1,500 volts DC. Assess the cable's rating, product presentation and intended use; do not decide scope solely from the encoder's signal voltage. Where the regulations apply, the importer must check conformity before placing the equipment on the market.

Separately assess the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2012. Government guidance includes equipment cables and spare parts unless specifically excluded. Do not assume that use on an industrial machine automatically establishes an exclusion. Request material evidence tied to the actual insulation, sheath, contacts and solder, and document the scope decision.

Both instruments were checked in their revised form on the UK legislation website. This section concerns Great Britain; the government's hazardous-substance guidance identifies differences for Northern Ireland. Obtain a separate assessment for that destination.

UK duty for finished connector-fitted feedback cables

The UK Trade Tariff was checked on 15 October 2026 with China selected. Code 8544429090 is a candidate for other insulated electric conductors fitted with connectors, rated at no more than 1,000 volts. Classification remains dependent on the actual goods; this table does not cover unterminated reels or every hybrid assembly.

The tariff lists standard duty of 2% and standard VAT of 20%. Check current China-specific measures, including any anti-dumping duty, before declaring the shipment. Do not claim a reduced rate without establishing eligibility.

Worked duty and import VAT example

Hypothetical calculation, not a quotation: assume qualifying assemblies under 8544429090 have an agreed customs value of £12,600, including freight and insurance to the UK border. Assume a further £200 for delivery to the first UK destination, not already included, and no other additions or reliefs.

Duty: £12,600 × 2% = £252. Import VAT base: £12,600 + £252 + £200 = £13,052. Import VAT: £13,052 × 20% = £2,610.40. Duty plus import VAT: £2,862.40.

HMRC requires relevant incidental expenses and customs duty to be added to the customs value for import VAT. Include applicable clearance and handling costs in a real calculation. The UK import duty and VAT guide explains the wider calculation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I approve a replacement by connector photographs?

Use photographs to shortlist it, then require the pin-to-pin drawing, connector references and a sample tested on the intended motor and drive. Make the approved drawing part of the order.

What should a moving-axis sample test record?

Record cable length and construction, connector references, carrier geometry, movement conditions, test duration, feedback faults and electrical results before and after movement. Agree the pass criteria in advance.

Does a flame-test report prove this is a suitable encoder cable?

No. IEC 60332-1-2 addresses single-cable flame propagation. Assess wiring, shielding, functional compatibility and movement endurance separately.
