Sourcing welding cables from China

Welding cables from China carry 2% UK duty across the selected lines, with no rate variation for ordinary products. Confirm with the relevant authority whether the cable's voltage rating and specification require conformity documents and CE or UKCA marking for sale in Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources welding cables.

2% duty on ordinary welding cables

Heading 8544 covers insulated electrical conductors, including welding cables supplied on drums or fitted with connectors. Classification depends on connector fitment, rated voltage and individual conductor-wire diameter. The rows show possible lines for different specifications; a welding application alone does not determine the code.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the selected lines carry 2% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no attached import controls. The connector-fitted line has suspensions for a specifically described cable and offshore wind cable manufacture under authorised use. These do not cover ordinary welding leads. The selected unterminated lines have no suspensions. Import VAT is normally 20%.

Confirm the commodity code using the cable drawing, voltage rating, strand diameter and termination details. For the wider heading, see electrical cable and wire harnesses.

Specify the conductor and welding duty

Specify copper material, conductor cross-section, strand construction, finished diameter, insulation and sheath compounds, and usable length. Give the welding current, duty cycle, ambient conditions and cable layout for which you need performance evidence. Agree flexibility, abrasion, oil and heat resistance against the intended workshop conditions. For terminated leads, identify the connector interface, current rating, lug dimensions, crimp method and strain relief. For torch consumables, see our MIG contact tip sourcing guide.

For sale in Great Britain, confirm with the relevant authority whether cables designed for use between 50 and 1,000 V alternating current, or 75 and 1,500 V direct current, fall within the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016. Ask whether the exact cable requires technical documentation, a declaration of conformity and CE or UKCA marking. Importers must ensure that equipment has easily understandable English instructions. Establish the actual cable specification and supply route before choosing the conformity approach. Arrange testing and certification against that specification.

Approve a sample with the intended connectors and routing. Ask for batch-linked conductor resistance, insulation and termination test results, plus reports matching the actual sheath compound. HSE advises employers to programme regular checks for fixed and mobile welding sets; agree inspection and replacement guidance with the supplier.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: An illustrative batch of welding cable drums for a welding-equipment distributor, not a quote under 8544 49 95 90, invoiced at £16,000 free on board, with £1,100 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £17,100. Duty at 2% is £342. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £17,442, so it is £3,488.40. Import taxes total £3,830.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £342 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Conductor: strip a sample, verify copper throughout, measure strand construction and compare conductor resistance with the approved specification.

Insulation: check thickness, cuts, splits and flattened areas; compare flexibility and batch insulation test results with the approved sample.

Terminations: check connector fit, current rating, crimp security and strain relief; review pull-test and electrical test records for assembled leads.

Length and records: measure usable length and match drum or lead labels, batch references and test reports to the packing list. Arrange quality inspection before shipment and repeat arrival checks.

What goes wrong

A thick sheath can hide an undersized conductor, while copper-clad aluminium can resemble copper at the surface. Verify material, conductor dimensions and resistance independently. A cable that bends easily when new may still have unsuitable insulation for the buyer's heat, oil or abrasion conditions.

A connector can fit the welding set yet have an unsuitable current rating or a poor crimp. Agree evidence for the complete lead, including temperature rise under the intended welding duty. On arrival, hold damaged or unidentified batches apart until the supplier resolves the discrepancy.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on welding cables from China?

The selected welding-cable lines carry 2% duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. The listed suspensions on the connector-fitted line do not cover ordinary welding leads.

Which commodity code covers welding cable on a drum?

Unterminated cable falls under 8544 49. The exact line depends on rated voltage and individual conductor-wire diameter. Use the specification, rather than the welding application alone, to confirm classification.

Do welding cables need CE or UKCA marking?

For sale in Great Britain, confirm with the relevant authority whether the cable falls within the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 voltage scope and whether CE or UKCA marking and conformity documents are required. Check the actual cable specification and supply route first.

How do I check welding cable quality?

Verify copper material, conductor size and resistance, usable length, insulation integrity and flexibility. For assembled leads, check connector ratings, crimp security and batch-linked electrical test results.
