Sourcing thermocouple extension cables from China
Thermocouple extension cables from China normally pay 2% UK duty; the selected ordinary cable lines have no duty range beyond that rate. Electrical safety rules depend on designed operating voltage, while hazardous-substance rules need a scope check. Specify alloy and polarity. Cambridge China Bridge sources thermocouple extension cables.

Thermocouple extension cable duty and classification
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8544 covers insulated electric conductors, including cable fitted with connectors. The selected candidate lines for thermocouple extension cables carry 2% duty for Chinese-origin goods, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no attached import controls. Choose between them using connector status, designed voltage and individual conductor wire diameter.
The line 8544 42 90 90 has conditional suspensions for a specifically described cable and for offshore wind cable manufacture under authorised use. These do not provide a general exemption for thermocouple extension cables. The other selected lines have no suspensions. Do not apply the heading's duty-free telecommunications categories simply because a cable carries a measurement signal.
Send the alloy specification, cable drawing, voltage rating and connector details to your customs broker to confirm the commodity code. The rows are classification candidates, not interchangeable choices. For the sensing assembly rather than its extension cable, see thermocouple probes.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Extension cable fitted with connectors, up to 1,000 V, other | 8544 42 90 90 | 2% | None |
| Unterminated cable, individual conductor wires over 0.51 mm, up to 1,000 V | 8544 49 91 00 | 2% | None |
| Unterminated extension cable, up to 80 V, other | 8544 49 93 90 | 2% | None |
| Unterminated extension cable, over 80 V but below 1,000 V, other | 8544 49 95 90 | 2% | None |
Specify alloy, polarity and working conditions
State the thermocouple type and whether you require extension alloy or compensating alloy. Define the permitted measurement error and the temperature range over which the cable must achieve it. Specify solid or stranded conductors, conductor size, insulation and sheath materials, screening, flexibility, reel length and connector contact materials. Agree the colour convention explicitly and supply a termination drawing.
Confirm with the relevant authority whether the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations apply to the cable's designed operating voltage and what technical documentation, declaration of conformity and CE or UKCA marking are needed. Assess designed operating voltage rather than treating an insulation test voltage as the operating rating.
Hazardous-substance regulations cover electrical and electronic equipment, including cables, unless specifically excluded. Check the proposed product's scope and request material evidence for insulation, sheath and connector plating. For products in scope, confirm technical documentation and declaration of conformity requirements with the relevant authority. Individual products must show the importer's name or trademark and a contactable address on the product or packaging.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 5,000 metres of unterminated thermocouple extension cable under 8544 49 93 90, invoiced at £16,000 free on board, with £1,100 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £17,100. Duty at 2% is £342. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £17,442, so it is £3,488.40. Import taxes total £3,830.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £342 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Alloy and response: compare bulk samples with the approved cable using a controlled temperature comparison across the agreed working range; retain the batch results.
Polarity and termination: trace conductor identity through every connector, check contact materials against the drawing and test continuity, strain relief and termination security.
Insulation and screening: inspect sheath damage, conductor separation and screen termination; verify dimensions and agreed insulation test results.
Reels and records: check supplied length, reel identification, cable markings and batch traceability against the order. Use quality inspection to plan checks before shipment.

What goes wrong
A cable can pass continuity testing while producing the wrong temperature reading. Wrong alloy, reversed polarity or unsuitable connector contacts can introduce measurement error. An agreed colour convention helps identification but does not prove conductor composition. Compare the complete cable assembly with the approved sample under the intended conditions.
Compensating cable supplied as extension cable, insulation selected for the wrong environment and inconsistent alloy between reels can undermine repeat orders. Approve a representative sample, prohibit unapproved material substitutions and retain identifiable samples from each supplied batch.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on thermocouple extension cables from China?
The selected ordinary cable lines carry 2% duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm the code from connector status, designed voltage and conductor wire diameter; conditional suspensions are not general relief.
Can I use ordinary copper cable to extend a thermocouple?
Do not approve a substitution on continuity alone. Specify the required extension or compensating alloy and verify the complete assembly's measurement performance over the agreed working range.
Does thermocouple extension cable need CE or UKCA marking?
Check the applicable product rules. Electrical safety scope depends on designed operating voltage; hazardous-substance rules can cover cables independently. A low signal voltage alone does not settle the marking question.
What should I ask the Chinese factory to test?
Ask for batch-linked alloy and temperature-response evidence, polarity and continuity checks, termination security, insulation results and reel-length checks against your agreed specification.
