Sourcing thermocouple probes from China

Thermocouple thermometers and qualifying probe parts under heading 9025 carry 0% UK duty from China. Confirm whether the shipment is a complete instrument or a component, and assess electrical conformity for the supplied configuration. Cambridge China Bridge sources thermocouple probes.

Duty and classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 11 October 2026, heading 9025 covers thermometers, pyrometers and other measuring instruments, together with parts and accessories. The relevant thermometer and parts lines carry 0% duty from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control recorded in the supplied data.

Complete thermocouple thermometers are candidates for 9025 19 00 90; qualifying replacement probe assemblies may fall under 9025 90 00 90. A bare sensor is not automatically a thermometer part. Confirm the commodity code using its construction, function and supplied configuration. The table repeats these codes for different buying formats.

This guide concerns thermocouple probes rather than liquid-filled instruments. See thermometers and hygrometers for the wider heading and its mercury restrictions. Duty and import VAT are separate; see UK import duty and VAT.

Specify the probe and its measuring system

Agree the thermocouple alloy type, operating range, permitted error, sheath material, diameter, insertion length and tip construction. State whether the measuring junction is grounded, insulated or exposed. Specify immersion, surface or air measurement, the process medium and the cleaning method. For resistance sensors, see our guide to platinum resistance temperature probes. For pressure measurement alongside temperature sensing, see our pressure transmitter sourcing guide.

Match the connector, polarity and extension cable to the receiving instrument. Agree cable insulation, strain relief, mounting thread and any compression fitting. Ask for calibration results identifying the probe and test conditions; distinguish probe-only results from checks made with the intended reader. For insulation test equipment sourcing, see our insulation resistance tester guide.

For a probe supplied with an electronic reader or transmitter, assess electromagnetic compatibility for the complete configuration. Great Britain’s electromagnetic compatibility rules apply to electrical and electronic equipment liable to generate electromagnetic disturbance, with exceptions. Ask the supplier to explain the scope assessment for a passive probe sold separately.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of replacement thermocouple probe assemblies, subject to classification under 9025 90 00 90, invoiced at £24,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £25,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £25,500, so it is £5,100. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: compare alloy type, junction construction, sheath material, dimensions and connector against the approved drawing and sample.

Response: compare the probe and intended reader with a calibrated reference across the agreed range; check stabilisation and repeatability.

Wiring: verify polarity and continuity, then flex the cable at the connector and strain relief while watching for intermittent readings.

Build: check tip welds, sheath straightness, mounting fit and sealing against the agreed use; match calibration records and batch labels to the delivered probes.

What goes wrong

A connector that fits can still have the wrong polarity or alloy contacts. The wrong extension cable can introduce measurement error, while a changed junction construction can affect response and compatibility with the reader. Freeze these details in the purchase specification rather than accepting a photograph as the specification.

Cable breaks near the strain relief can produce intermittent readings. Poor sealing can admit moisture, and a thin or unsuitable sheath can bend or deteriorate in service. Repeat measurement checks after the agreed flexing, cleaning and exposure tests, and retain the approved sample for comparison.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on thermocouple probes from China?

The supplied tariff data shows 0% for 9025 19 00 90 and 9025 90 00 90, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm whether the goods qualify as a thermometer or its parts.

Can I use the same thermocouple probe with any reader?

Match the thermocouple type, connector polarity and extension cable to the reader. A physically compatible plug does not establish measurement compatibility.

Do thermocouple probes need electrical conformity checks?

Assess the supplied configuration. Electrical and electronic equipment liable to generate electromagnetic disturbance falls within the electromagnetic compatibility rules, subject to exceptions.

How should I check a factory’s calibration results?

Match the results to the delivered probe, test conditions and agreed tolerance. Compare samples with a calibrated reference using the intended reader across the agreed operating range.
