Sourcing strain-gauge load cells from China
Strain-gauge load cells considered under the other measuring instruments line of heading 9031 carry 0% UK duty from China. Confirm the classification and check compliance for the assembled weighing instrument as well as the sensor specification. Cambridge China Bridge sources strain-gauge load cells.

Duty on strain-gauge load cells
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 18 October 2026, heading 9031 covers measuring or checking instruments not specified elsewhere. Its other measuring instruments line, 9031 80 80 00, carries 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and no suspension listed. The table shows load-cell configurations against the same candidate commodity line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.
The UK Trade Tariff attaches an import control of fluorinated greenhouse gases to this line. The official guidance reviewed does not establish the declaration requirement for an ordinary strain-gauge load cell. Ask your customs broker to confirm the requirement for the actual goods before shipment, using the supplier's construction and materials information.
Confirm the commodity code from the sensor's function, construction and what is supplied with it. A complete scale needs its own classification assessment. See weighing scales for the wider buying context.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-point strain-gauge load cells | 9031 80 80 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the load path and electrical interface
State whether the cell measures tension, compression or both, its rated capacity, permitted overload, mounting dimensions and load direction. Specify body material, sealing, cable length and entry, connector, excitation, output sensitivity and bridge resistance. Match these to the indicator and mounting assembly rather than accepting a catalogue description alone.
Agree acceptance limits for zero balance, repeatability, hysteresis, creep and temperature effects. Ask for calibration records tied to each supplied sensor and traceable to national standards. Test an approved sample with your indicator, cable arrangement and mounting hardware before approving production.
Official guidance describes load cells, indicators and software as components connected into a complete instrument. For regulated non-automatic weighing instruments, the manufacturer must maintain procedures that keep series production in conformity with essential requirements. Ask the system supplier how the chosen sensor and any substitutions are covered; use testing and certification support to settle the evidence needed for your application.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of shear-beam load cells for platform-scale assembly under 9031 80 80 00, invoiced at £6,000 free on board, with £618 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £6,618. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £6,618, so it is £1,323.60. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity and fit: compare model markings, sensor identification, mounting holes, threads, load direction and contact surfaces with the approved drawing.
Electrical interface: check cable continuity, connector pin assignment, screen connection, bridge resistance and unloaded output against the agreed specification.
Performance: apply calibrated reference loads in increasing and decreasing sequences; record repeatability, hysteresis, return to zero and drift while holding a load.
Arrival condition: inspect cable glands, seals, corrosion and impact damage; repeat the agreed checks after fitting the cells to your assembly. Record results against sensor identification using the inspection guide.

What goes wrong
A cell can fit the mounting holes yet give unsuitable output for the indicator. Cable colours can differ between suppliers, and a substituted connector can reverse the signal. Require a wiring diagram and test the actual combination before accepting the batch.
Side loading, uneven mounting surfaces, cable strain and overload during installation can produce unstable readings or a permanent zero shift. Sealing defects can appear as drift after exposure to damp conditions. Agree installation instructions, protective packing and a rejection process for cells that fail the assembled-system test.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on strain-gauge load cells from China?
The candidate line 9031 80 80 00 carries 0% duty from China in the supplied tariff snapshot, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure. Confirm the code for your actual sensor.
Can I buy a load cell using capacity alone?
Specify load direction, mounting geometry, output sensitivity, excitation, bridge resistance, sealing and wiring. Test the sensor with your intended indicator and mounting assembly.
Does a calibration certificate cover the complete weighing system?
Assess the assembled system separately. Official guidance describes load cells, indicators and software as components of a complete instrument. Ask the system supplier for evidence covering the actual combination.
What should I check when the load cells arrive?
Check identity, dimensions, cables and seals, then repeat the agreed electrical and reference-load tests. Retest after installation to detect mounting effects, zero shift and unstable readings.
