Sourcing wood veneer sheets from China
Veneer sheets and other wood sliced, peeled or sawn up to 6 mm thick from China, such as rotary poplar and eucalyptus or sliced oak and walnut, pay 0% UK duty with no anti-dumping duty. Veneer is within the UK Timber Regulations, so the importer must do due diligence on species and origin, and the tariff flags CITES and plant health checks. Cambridge China Bridge sources veneer.
Rotary and sliced wood veneer from China pays 0% UK duty. UK Timber Regulations due diligence, CITES and plant health checks, grading and an example.

Zero duty, with species checks
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 26 September 2026, sheets for veneering and other wood of heading 4408, coniferous (4408 10), tropical (4408 31 and 4408 39) and other species (4408 90), carried 0% on goods from China, with no anti-dumping measure. Lines split by whether the veneer is planed, sanded or end-jointed and by thickness at 1 mm, and the declaration reports cubic metres.
Other-species lines carry a CITES import control and a plant health release check, so the botanical species must be named on the documents; see the [GOV.UK guidance on CITES](https://www.gov.uk/guidance/cites-imports-and-exports) and on [importing plant products](https://www.gov.uk/guidance/import-plants-and-plant-products-from-non-eu-countries-to-great-britain). Plywood made from the veneer is covered in our plywood guide.

Timber legality
Veneer placed on the GB market is within the Timber and Timber Products (Placing on the Market) Regulations 2013, so the importer must gather information on the species, country of harvest and supply chain, assess the risk that the timber was illegally harvested, reduce any risk it finds and keep records; see the [GOV.UK guidance on timber regulations](https://www.gov.uk/guidance/regulations-timber-and-flegt-licences).
Veneer mills in China often use imported logs as well as plantation poplar and eucalyptus, so ask where each species was harvested, not only where it was peeled, and keep chain of custody certificates such as FSC or PEFC where they are claimed.
Worked duty example
For a made-up shipment of 40 m³ of rotary-cut poplar veneer, 0.6 mm under 4408 90 85 00, add the £2,800 of freight and insurance to the £12,000 free-on-board price and customs sees £14,800. Duty on wood veneer is zero, leaving import VAT of £2,960, 20% of the customs value. For a VAT-registered buyer that is a cash-flow cost rather than a lasting one. The declaration also reports the volume in cubic metres. The duty and VAT guide walks through the calculation.
What goes wrong
Veneer fails on thickness, moisture and grade. Sheets vary in thickness across the leaf so they press unevenly; veneer shipped too wet goes mouldy or stains, and too dry splits; face grades include knots, splits, stains and colour variation beyond the grade; and bundles of sliced veneer lose their sequence, which matters for matched faces.
Measure thickness at several points on sampled sheets, check moisture content with a calibrated meter on arrival, grade faces against agreed photos or the appearance classes of BS EN 635 where the veneer is for plywood faces, check bundle sequence and counts, and confirm species and harvest records before shipment.
Cambridge China Bridge sources rotary and sliced veneers for plywood, furniture and panel makers, with species and origin records gathered before the order. See how we verify suppliers.
