Sourcing solid silicone rubber cord from China

The supplied heading has a flat 2% UK duty rate for goods from China. Confirm that your solid silicone rubber cord belongs in this heading before using that rate, and obtain food-contact evidence where relevant. Cambridge China Bridge sources solid silicone rubber cord.

Duty and classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 6 November 2026, heading 4008 covers plates, sheets, strip, rods and profile shapes of vulcanised rubber other than hard rubber. The supplied non-cellular rods and profiles line is 4008 29 00 90. The table shows different solid cord shapes against that same line, conditional on classification confirmation.

All supplied lines carry 2% duty for goods from China. The supplied data records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls. These findings apply to the supplied heading, rather than establishing the classification of every silicone product.

The wider published guide notes that silicone sheet may classify as plastic. Give your broker the cord composition, cross-section and intended use, and confirm the commodity code before ordering. See the rubber sheet and matting guide for the wider heading.

Compound, cross-section and sealing performance

Specify solid silicone rather than sponge or hollow tubing. Agree the compound identity, curing method, colour, cross-section, dimensional tolerances, coil length and whether joins are acceptable. Record operating temperature, contact fluids, cleaning conditions and the groove in which the cord will sit.

Agree hardness, tensile strength, elongation and compression-set acceptance criteria against an approved sample. Test sealing performance in the intended assembly rather than accepting a hardness result alone. For food-contact applications, obtain evidence under the food-contact materials regulation that relates to the supplied compound and intended use.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 20 coils of solid cord, conditional on confirmed classification under 4008 29 00 90, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £860 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,860. Duty at 2% is £77.20. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,937.20, so it is £787.44. Import taxes total £864.64; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £77.20 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions: measure the cross-section along sampled coils without stretching the cord, and compare it with the agreed drawing and tolerances.

Surface: check for cuts, bubbles, contamination, tackiness, flat spots and hidden joins; examine cut ends for internal voids.

Performance: compare hardness and compression recovery with the approved sample, and trial the cord in the intended groove.

Batch identity: match coil labels, compound records and relevant test reports; check delivered length and packaging for distortion.

What goes wrong

Cord can match the sample colour yet differ in hardness, compound or cure. Diameter variation makes installation uneven, while internal voids, surface cuts and unapproved joins can interrupt sealing. A tightly wound coil can also arrive with flattened sections.

Agree rejection criteria before production and retain a reference sample. Ask the factory to identify any compound or curing change before shipment. A generic food-grade statement is insufficient purchasing evidence for a particular compound and application.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on solid silicone rubber cord from China?

The supplied heading 4008 lines carry 2% duty from China. Use this rate only after confirming the cord's commodity code; silicone products need careful classification.

Which dimensions should I specify for silicone cord?

Specify the cross-section, dimensional tolerances, coil length and permitted joins. Include the installation groove and an approved sample.

Can I buy silicone cord for food-contact seals?

Obtain food-contact evidence for the supplied compound and intended use. State the food, temperature, contact conditions and cleaning process in the purchasing specification.

How do I check silicone cord before shipment?

Check dimensions, surface defects, internal voids, joins and batch identity. Compare hardness and compression recovery with the approved sample, then trial it in the intended assembly.
