Sourcing solid silicone rubber sheets from China

The supplied heading 4008 lines carry a flat 2% UK duty from China. Confirm classification first: silicone sheet may classify as plastic, so this rate is conditional. For food-contact grades, confirm applicable requirements and supporting evidence with the relevant authority. Cambridge China Bridge sources solid silicone rubber sheets.

Conditional 2% duty under heading 4008

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 4008 covers plates, sheets, strip, rods and profiles of vulcanised rubber other than hard rubber. Every supplied line carries 2% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or import control.

For solid sheet classified here, 4008 21 90 00 covers other non-cellular rubber plates, sheets and strip. The table shows supply formats under that same line. Silicone sheet may classify as plastic, so do not apply this rate from the product name alone. Cut gaskets and seals fall under heading 4016.

A customs declaration needs a commodity code. Give your broker the composition, cure details, intended use and supplied form, then confirm the commodity code. For cellular material within the wider heading, see silicone sponge sheets.

Compound, cure and sheet tolerances

Specify solid silicone rather than sponge, the compound identity, cure system, post-curing, colour, surface finish and reinforcement status. Agree hardness, thickness, width, length and tolerances against an approved sample. Define the operating conditions and the compression or heat-ageing performance your application needs.

For food-contact use, confirm applicable food-contact requirements and the evidence needed with the relevant authority. Ask for reports tied to the actual compound and colour, covering the intended food, contact time and temperature. For prolonged or repeated skin contact, confirm with HSE whether UK REACH PAH restrictions apply to the intended product. Agree the testing scope through testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 20 rolls of solid silicone sheet, subject to classification under 4008 21 90 00, invoiced at £5,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £7,000. Duty at 2% is £140. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £7,140, so it is £1,428. Import taxes total £1,568; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £140 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match batch labels, compound details, cure records and reports to the approved sample and purchase specification.

Dimensions: measure thickness across the width and along the roll; check width, length, edge quality and flatness after unpacking.

Performance: compare hardness, tensile behaviour, tear resistance and compression recovery with the agreed specification; test heat ageing where the application needs it.

Surface and packing: inspect for bubbles, pinholes, embedded particles, tackiness, odour and permanent creases; check that wrapping keeps contact surfaces clean.

What goes wrong

A hardness match can hide a different compound or filler loading. Sheet may tear at cut edges, retain compression marks or vary in thickness enough to disrupt sealing. Incomplete curing or inadequate post-curing can leave tackiness or persistent odour. Compare production material with the approved sample before shipment.

A generic food-contact report may describe another colour or compound. Trace reports to the supplied batch and intended conditions rather than accepting a food-grade claim alone. On arrival, retain labelled samples and record defects before cutting or processing the rolls.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on solid silicone sheets from China?

The supplied heading 4008 lines carry 2% duty, with no listed trade remedy. Silicone sheet may classify as plastic, so confirm the code before using that rate.

Can I buy solid silicone sheet for food contact?

For food-contact grades, confirm applicable food-contact requirements and the evidence needed with the relevant authority. Request reports matching the compound, colour and intended contact conditions.

What should I specify besides thickness?

Specify compound identity, cure and post-curing, hardness, dimensional tolerances, surface finish and the performance needed in your application.

Are silicone sheets and finished gaskets the same tariff code?

Cut gaskets and seals fall under heading 4016. Silicone sheet may classify as plastic; confirm classification for the form actually imported.
