Start with the goods and delivery address

Whether buying a personal item, importing your first business order or replenishing larger volumes, prepare a shipping brief: product description, materials, intended use, collection address, destination postcode, cargo-ready date, package count, packed dimensions and gross weight.

Identify batteries, liquids, chemicals, food, fragile goods and oversized pieces before requesting quotes. Check carrier acceptance separately from destination import and product requirements. DHL's cited restrictions page concerns its US Express service; confirm the rules for your actual route and carrier. [6][9]

Choose the mode after measuring the packed shipment. Use the shipping volume calculator, read what CBM means in shipping, then compare actual quotations with the sea versus air freight calculator.

Sea, air, rail or express: compare the actual service

The published ranges below describe named routes or products, not a universal China-to-UK delivery timetable. They also measure different parts of the journey. Sea estimates come from Maersk's guide dated 27 September 2023; the other service pages were checked on 18 October 2026. Obtain a current route-specific schedule before booking.

FCL means full-container-load shipping; LCL means less-than-container-load shipping, sharing container space with other shipments. When either could suit your load, request both complete quotations rather than applying a fixed volume threshold.

Treat the cost column as a quotation checklist. Ask about minimum charges, origin and destination handling, and final delivery before comparing totals.

Shipping modes, published transit examples and practical suitability
ModePublished speed example and scopeCost directionVolume suitabilityRestrictions and checks
Sea: FCL or LCLMaersk's 2023 guide gives 30–45 days for China–Europe and 35–45 days for China–UK ocean freight, with longer journeys possible door-to-door. These are historical estimates, not current booking schedules. Confirm LCL consolidation timing separately. [1]Request sea quotes for bulky, non-urgent cargo. Include origin and destination charges when comparing LCL and FCL.Compare shared-container LCL with dedicated-container FCL according to packed volume and handling needs.Confirm equipment, packing and cargo acceptance with the carrier, and check destination import restrictions separately. [9]
Air freightDHL lists typical product transit times of 1–2 days for Air Priority and 5–7 days for Air Economy. Priority is described as door-to-door from pickup. These are global product examples, not verified China–UK timings; confirm the quoted scope and route. [2]Compare the complete air quote with other modes and with the cost of waiting or running out of stock.Request quotes for urgent cartons, pallets, valuable goods and replenishment orders.Check piece dimensions, weight and dangerous-goods acceptance. DHL lists oversized, heavyweight and dangerous goods under its Tailored Lift product. [2]
Rail, with connecting transportDB Cargo Eurasia publishes 15–17 days from Xi'an to Duisburg and 18–20 days from Yiwu to Duisburg. These are named rail routes, not final-address delivery promises or China–UK totals. [3]DHL describes rail as more cost-efficient than air. Test that comparison with a quotation covering every leg of your shipment. [5]DHL advertises LCL and FCL services between China and Europe; confirm the route and connecting services. [5]Confirm the complete corridor, transit-country requirements and onward delivery. DHL's advertised rail LCL and FCL services exclude dangerous goods. [5]
Express or courierFedEx China's page lists International Priority end-of-day delivery typically in 1–2 business days, depending on destination. This is not a verified China–UK timing; request a shipment-specific estimate. [4]Request a complete courier quote for small urgent shipments and compare freight alternatives where appropriate.Request quotes for samples, replacement parts, personal purchases and smaller commercial orders, subject to service limits.Check package limits and restricted-item approval. DHL's US Express guidance lists lithium batteries, perfumes and aerosols among goods that may require approval; confirm your actual route. [6]

Turn a freight estimate into a delivery plan

Ask the forwarder to identify each stage: collection, export formalities, consolidation where applicable, main transport, any transfer, destination clearance, cargo release and final delivery. Confirm which stages the published or quoted transit range includes.

Request the booking cut-off, planned departure, expected arrival and delivery arrangement in writing. Ask whether the estimate uses calendar days or business days and what happens if the cargo misses its booked departure.

Ask the declarant which information or checks remain outstanding. Arrange delivery against confirmed release and cargo availability rather than assuming a fixed clearance period. UK guidance covers declarations, tax payment and goods held at the border. [18]

For rail deliveries beyond the named European terminal, request the connecting road, rail or sea leg explicitly. Confirm the final-address delivery estimate separately from terminal arrival.

Compare the full quote and agree responsibilities

Request itemised charges for collection, export documentation and clearance, origin handling, main freight, surcharges, destination handling, import brokerage, applicable taxes, insurance and final delivery. Ask which charges are estimates, which are excluded and when the quote expires.

For LCL, ask about consolidation and deconsolidation charges. For FCL, confirm delivery, unloading and empty-container return arrangements. For air and express, request the carrier's chargeable-weight calculation, including any volumetric-weight calculation.

Specify the Incoterms rule, named place and edition. Under Incoterms 2020 DAP, the buyer handles import clearance; under DDP, the seller handles it and bears applicable import duties and taxes. ICC warns that foreign sellers may have difficulty completing destination formalities. [8]

Before accepting DDP, confirm the declaration parties, tax arrangements and clearance evidence. Identify any contractual variation expressly. Confirm insurance separately: neither DAP nor DDP requires the seller to arrange insurance for the buyer. [8]

Prepare the documents before collection

Ask the supplier and forwarder to reconcile the commercial invoice, packing list and transport document before dispatch. DHL's guidance says packing-list information should correspond with the commercial invoice and air waybill. [7]

Use the checklist below to request a shipment-specific document review. Confirm which licences, origin evidence and product documents your goods require rather than treating every supporting document as mandatory. [9]

Practical shipping document checklist
Document or informationWhat to check
Commercial invoiceCheck buyer and seller details, accurate goods description, quantities, value, currency and agreed delivery terms.
Packing listCheck package contents, package count, dimensions, gross and net weights, and identifying marks.
Transport documentConfirm the appropriate sea transport document, air waybill, courier waybill or rail consignment document, including consignee and release instructions.
Customs instructionsConfirm importer identity, required registration, commodity classification, origin, valuation information and authority for the appointed declarant.
Conditional supporting evidenceAsk which licences, origin evidence, product documents, dangerous-goods information and insurance evidence are required for this shipment.

Check the destination's rules: EU and US examples

Check transport acceptance and destination customs requirements separately. Confirm the registrations, declarations and product permissions for the actual destination.

For the EU, the European Commission explains EORI identification for customs operations and which economic operators and other persons require registration. Check the relevant member state's requirements for your import. [16]

For the US, CBP explains that using a licensed customs broker does not remove the importer's responsibility for compliance. Confirm the requirements for your goods and entry before shipment. [17]

The UK example below illustrates customs and import VAT valuation. Check the destination's own tax rules before applying any similar approach elsewhere.

UK illustrative example: customs clearance, value and VAT

For a business import into Great Britain, confirm the importer and applicable GB EORI arrangements. HMRC exempts goods that are both for personal use only and not controlled from the EORI requirement. Check Northern Ireland and non-established importer eligibility separately. [10]

Before dispatch, check classification, origin and product permissions. Confirm who will declare the goods, what information they need, and the applicable checks, tax arrangements and release requirements. [9][18]

Illustrative scenario: goods travel from a Chinese supplier through a UK port to a London warehouse. If transaction value is applicable, start with the price paid or payable and make required adjustments, including relevant transport, loading and handling to UK entry. Do not double-count included charges. Airfreight has specific apportionment rules. [11]

For import VAT, add applicable import duties and other import charges, excluding VAT itself, plus relevant incidental expenses to the first UK destination and a further UK destination known at import. Avoid double-counting costs already included. The London delivery can therefore affect the VAT value. Check the goods' actual tax treatment. [12]

Eligible UK VAT-registered businesses may use postponed VAT accounting for qualifying business imports. Give an agent written confirmation before the declaration and check the monthly statement. Normal VAT recovery rules apply; customs duty remains separate. [13]

Keep the declaration, invoice and relevant tax evidence. Follow the UK customs clearance guide, UK import duty and VAT guide and China-to-UK import checklist for the detailed process. [9]

UK gateway example: ports, airports and city delivery

Maersk's UK information lists Felixstowe, Southampton Container Terminal and London Gateway as ports. Compare the booked sailing, terminal charges and onward delivery quotation for your address. [14]

HMRC's cargo-system guidance lists courier operations at Heathrow and Gatwick, and DHL Aviation locations including East Midlands and Heathrow airports. Confirm your booking's actual airport, handling facility and flight connections. [15]

For London, Cambridge, Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh or another delivery address, provide the exact postcode, receiving hours and unloading arrangements. Confirm vehicle access, whether a tail lift or forklift is needed, and the agreed delivery point.

For a UK shipment requiring coordinated clearance and onward transport, see UK customs and delivery services. Ask Cambridge China Bridge to confirm the scope, responsible providers and exclusions for your shipment.

Before you authorise shipment

Confirm cargo acceptance, final packed measurements, document consistency, importer identity, customs instructions, insurance choice, quote validity and delivery scope. Keep a written record of the agreed responsibilities.

For a small purchase, compare the complete courier quote with freight plus destination handling and delivery. For recurring or larger orders, compare replenishment options against stock needs and storage capacity. Request separate express or air quotes for urgent goods and sea quotes for the balance if useful.

Give Cambridge China Bridge the product details, packed dimensions and weight, supplier location and final delivery address when requesting help defining the shipment.

Sources and dating

Bracketed source numbers refer to the official or carrier pages below, checked on 18 October 2026. Dates are identified as publication, page-update or manual-update dates where verified. A check date is not a publication date. Published transit examples apply to the stated service and scope and are not current booking guarantees.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest way to ship my order from China?

Request complete sea and courier or air quotations using the same packed dimensions, weight and destination. Compare minimum charges, origin and destination handling, taxes and final delivery before choosing.

How long will shipping from China actually take?

Use the table as a set of published service examples, then obtain a current estimate for your shipment. Confirm whether the estimate ends at a port, terminal, airport or your delivery address.

Should I book LCL or a full container?

Request both quotations when either could suit your load. Compare total charges, handling, packing needs and delivery arrangements rather than applying a fixed volume threshold.

Does rail from China deliver straight to my UK address?

Confirm the complete route. The DB Cargo examples here end in Duisburg; request the connecting transport, customs arrangements and final-address delivery estimate separately. [3]

Can I ship batteries or perfume with my other goods?

Disclose them before booking and obtain route-specific acceptance. DHL's US Express guidance lists lithium batteries, perfumes and aerosols among goods that may need approval; it does not establish acceptance for a China–UK shipment. [6]

Will a DDP quote include customs and taxes?

Under Incoterms 2020 DDP, the seller handles import clearance and bears applicable import duties and taxes. Confirm the named place, practical arrangements, evidence and any expressly agreed variation. [8]

I am buying for myself. Do I need a UK EORI?

HMRC says an EORI is not required for goods that are both for personal use only and not controlled. This is an EORI exemption; check taxes and other import requirements separately. [10]

Does postponed VAT accounting make my UK import tax-free?

No. Eligible UK VAT-registered businesses account for import VAT through their VAT return under HMRC's conditions. Normal VAT recovery rules still apply, and customs duty remains separate. [13]

Can I arrange delivery to London or another city?

Request delivery to the exact postcode and agree receiving hours, vehicle access, unloading and the delivery point. Confirm explicitly whether the quote includes transport from the arrival port or airport.
