Chinese New Year Shipping Cut-Offs: Sea, Air, Rail, Express

Chinese New Year shipping cut-offs depend on the route, carrier, service and booking. Confirm collection, cargo acceptance and document deadlines separately, alongside factory readiness and destination delivery. Obtain written confirmation for your shipment; the historical examples below are not 2027 deadlines.

Which Chinese New Year shipping cut-off applies to your order?

Start with the shipment, rather than counting backwards from the public holiday alone. Ask your provider to distinguish the booking deadline, collection deadline, cargo acceptance deadline and documentation deadline. Confirm the factory’s final dispatch day separately.

Use these checks when arranging shipments from China, including shipments to the UK, EU and US. Confirm both origin-side readiness and destination delivery arrangements.

Use the CNY 2027 hub for holiday-date information and the factory closure dates guide for supplier shutdown planning. The historical carrier examples below do not establish any 2027 shipping deadline.

Sea, air, rail and express: what must you confirm?

Use this table as a request for shipment-specific information, not as a fixed countdown. Do not assume that a faster transport service allows later collection.

Chinese New Year cut-offs by transport mode
ModeDeadlines to obtainMain planning risk
Sea freightCollection, consolidation warehouse acceptance for part-load cargo, container gate-in, shipping instructions and verified gross mass where applicable.Goods may be finished but unable to reach the booked sailing before its cargo or document deadlines.
Air freightCollection, cargo terminal acceptance, document submission and the confirmed flight arrangement.Available flight space and the collection connection can constrain an urgent shipment.
Rail freightCollection, consolidation or terminal acceptance, documents and the booked departure.A train departure alone does not establish that collection and terminal handling are available.
Express or courierOrigin postcode collection availability, latest acceptance for the selected service and destination delivery arrangements.A courier service offered online may still depend on local holiday operations and cargo acceptance.

Why confirm sea freight cut-offs separately from the holiday?

Maersk’s vessel cut-off guidance lists separate deadlines for container gate-in, shipping instructions and verified gross mass. Check each deadline for the booked sailing.

For part-load sea freight, ask for the consolidation warehouse’s acceptance deadline as well as the vessel schedule. Maersk’s less-than-container-load terms distinguish warehouse delivery cut-offs from cargo pick-up dates stated in the booking confirmation.

Work backwards with the factory and transport provider from the actual booking. Agree time for inspection, packing, document corrections and collection, and confirm that the responsible people will be available.

If considering a different gateway, use the China export port selection guide to assess the route. Confirm the inland connection and onward booking before changing ports.

What do dated carrier notices actually show?

Maersk’s advisory dated 23 December 2025 announced a void sailing on its Far East Asia–Arabian Gulf network. The affected departure from Xingang was scheduled for 22 February 2026. Maersk said it would rebook cargo onto the remaining network. This was a route-specific cancellation, not a China-wide export cut-off.

DHL’s release dated 16 April 2026 described a China-origin rail-and-road project with train departures arranged before, during and after the Chinese New Year season. It did not give dates for those seasonal departures, so it does not establish service availability on particular public holidays or for another booking.

Ask your provider for the latest advisory covering your origin, destination, service and booking. Keep the notice date and any revised booking confirmation together.

Will air freight or express rescue a late order?

Request a confirmed alternative before changing mode. In its Europe market update dated 8 January 2026, Maersk warned that selected Asia-origin air routes could tighten as Chinese New Year approached and encouraged early booking and gateway flexibility.

DHL’s Singapore guidance says normal collection and delivery timings apply on Chinese New Year’s Eve, while standard collection and delivery are unavailable during the holiday. It separately describes a time-critical Same Day service. These statements concern Singapore operations and do not establish mainland China collection deadlines.

Give the provider the product description, packing details, dimensions, weight, collection address and required arrival date. Ask whether the goods are accepted on the proposed service, what space is confirmed and what happens if collection fails.

For an urgent portion of an order, request a separate air or express quote and compare the complete cost with the consequence of waiting. Keep the remaining shipment’s arrangements explicit.

What happens after the holiday: blank sailings, congestion and prices

Do not assume normal operations on the first working day. Maersk’s preparation guide dated 4 November 2025 describes shipment surges and port congestion before and after Chinese New Year, together with a gradual recovery in workforce availability.

If a sailing is cancelled, check the replacement booking, revised cut-offs and onward connections before telling customers a new delivery date.

Maersk’s guide also identifies pre-holiday demand and freight-rate pressure. Treat these as planning risks rather than a forecast for your shipment. Request a dated quote showing validity, included charges, applicable surcharges and cancellation terms.

UK example: changing transport can change the import cost

For goods imported into Great Britain, check customs valuation when replacing sea freight with air or express. HMRC’s guidance covers delivery costs up to the applicable place of introduction into the UK, including transport and insurance. Air transport costs have apportionment rules. Ask the customs agent to check the revised freight documents and avoid counting costs already included in the declared value twice.

Import VAT valuation starts with the customs value, even when no Customs Duty is payable. Add applicable Customs Duty, levies, excise duty and other import charges except VAT, plus relevant incidental expenses to the first UK destination and to a further UK destination known at importation. Have the agent identify the required additions without duplicating costs already included.

Before authorising dispatch

Get written agreement on cargo readiness, the last workable collection, cargo and document cut-offs, the booked movement and the destination delivery plan. Assign someone to monitor changes while the factory is closed.

Before accepting an alternative arrangement, request its confirmed service details, complete quotation and cancellation terms.

Frequently asked questions

What is the last shipping date before Chinese New Year?

Use shipment-specific deadlines rather than a single date for China. Obtain the cut-offs for your origin, destination, mode and booking, then confirm that the factory and collection provider can meet them.

My factory finishes before the holiday. Can I still miss the ship?

Yes. Production completion does not establish that collection, warehouse acceptance, container gate-in and required documents will meet the booked sailing’s deadlines.

Does sea freight always stop before air freight?

Do not assume a fixed order. Obtain the last workable collection and acceptance deadlines for each proposed service, then check factory readiness and available capacity.

Do freight trains stop throughout Chinese New Year?

DHL reported planned departures during the Chinese New Year season, without specifying their dates. That does not establish operations on particular public holidays. Confirm your departure, collection, terminal acceptance and connections.

Can I use a courier at the last minute?

Obtain confirmation of collection, cargo acceptance and a suitable service for your destination before relying on a courier. Check the local holiday operating arrangements alongside the quote.

Will everything move normally as soon as factories reopen?

Do not plan on that assumption. Check cargo readiness, collection capacity, port conditions and the actual departure schedule, including replacement arrangements for any cancelled sailing.

Are the carrier dates here the deadlines for 2027?

No. They are historical examples of specific carrier arrangements. Use the CNY 2027 hub for date information and obtain current cut-offs for your booking.

What should I ask for if I only have a small order?

Ask for the latest collection and acceptance times for the exact service, the complete price, cargo restrictions and the delivery estimate. For consolidated freight, also obtain the warehouse acceptance deadline.
