China Golden Week: factory closures and shipping

Plan Golden Week around your factory's actual shutdown and your forwarder's shipment cut-offs. Confirm materials, inspection, collection and document deadlines before promising UK delivery; a finished order still needs a workable freight booking. Coordinate these checks with Cambridge China Bridge.

Confirm the factory's actual closure

The published National Day break in 2026 is 1 to 7 October, with make-up working days on 20 September and 10 October. Use the China holiday calendar for the calendar, then ask each supplier for its last production day, last collection date and planned restart. Individual factories set their own closing and reopening dates.

Ask separately about component suppliers, packaging suppliers and subcontractors. Confirm who can release goods and answer shipment queries while the factory is closed. Put the answers into a shared schedule with named contacts; an office reopening does not establish that your production line has restarted.

Get cut-offs for the actual shipment

Ask the forwarder for the cut-offs attached to your proposed booking: cargo receipt, shipping instructions and, for container shipments, verified gross mass submission. Record the location, local time, responsible party and booking status. Ask whether the collection truck, receiving warehouse and terminal can accept your cargo on the planned dates.

For consolidated freight, check the consolidator's warehouse deadline as well as the vessel schedule. Ask what happens if another supplier's goods arrive late. A proposed sailing is not proof that your shipment has been accepted; request written booking confirmation and check for changes before collection.

Work backwards to production release

Start with the date stock must be available to your UK business. Use the shipping lead-time guide for the wider delivery chain. For the holiday plan, work backwards from confirmed cargo acceptance to collection, packing, inspection, any rework and production completion.

Ask the factory to show which materials are already available and which depend on a supplier that may close earlier. Approve the sample, specification, labels and packaging before releasing the run. Avoid late design changes unless the factory and forwarder have both confirmed a revised schedule.

Protect inspection and decide when to defer

Reserve inspection against the factory's completion milestone and leave room to correct defects before collection. Agree how inspected goods will be identified and held so they are not mixed with unfinished stock. Use the quality inspection guide to define the checks rather than reducing them to meet a holiday deadline.

Set a decision point: if materials, inspection readiness or cargo acceptance cannot be confirmed, compare shipping the approved finished portion with holding the whole order until after the break. Check the extra freight, handling and document work before agreeing a split. For a missed milestone, use the factory delay recovery guide.

Plan the hold and restart

For goods staying in China, agree where they will be stored, how they will be protected and who can access them during the closure. Record finished quantities, work in progress, outstanding defects and missing materials before staff leave. Keep a copy of the agreed specification and inspection findings with the order record.

After reopening, request evidence that your line has resumed and obtain a revised completion milestone. Reconfirm collection and booking rather than carrying forward an expired plan. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can coordinate factory progress checks and freight handovers against the same schedule.

Frequently asked questions

When is China's Golden Week in 2026?

The published National Day break is 1 to 7 October 2026. Make-up working days are 20 September and 10 October. Confirm your factory's own closure and restart dates.

What is the last shipping date before Golden Week?

Get the cut-offs for your actual booking from the forwarder, including collection and warehouse acceptance. Do not use the holiday start or vessel departure as your cargo deadline.

Will my factory reopen at full capacity?

Ask when your line will resume, whether materials are available and where your order sits in the queue. Request a revised completion milestone after reopening.

Should I split my order before Golden Week?

Consider shipping an inspected, approved finished portion if it meets your stock need. Compare the extra freight, handling and document work, and confirm the remaining production plan before agreeing.
