Which China port should you ship from to the UK?
Choose the export port by comparing the complete journey from the factory to your UK delivery address. Start with nearby ports, then check inland transport, cargo handoffs, available sailings and excluded charges. The cheapest sea rate may not give the cheapest delivered shipment. Ask Cambridge China Bridge to compare the routes.

Start with the factory address
Use the actual collection address, not the supplier's sales office. Give the forwarder the cargo description, packed dimensions, gross weight, readiness date and UK delivery postcode. Ask for nearby port options and an alternative where a different sailing could justify the inland move.
The table gives starting points for requesting quotes, not fixed port assignments. For inland factories, ask about road, rail or barge connections and where the goods would change hands. Our shipping overview covers transport modes and the wider journey.
| Factory area | Port shortlist | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang | Shanghai and Ningbo | Collection route, loading location and available UK sailings |
| Shenzhen and Dongguan | Yantian and Shekou | Exact terminal, road collection and any warehouse transfer |
| Guangzhou and Foshan | Nansha, with Shenzhen ports as alternatives | Road or barge connection against the ocean service offered |
| Shandong | Qingdao | Factory collection cost and the complete sailing itinerary |
| Tianjin, Hebei and nearby northern factories | Tianjin | Inland collection and connections to the UK destination |
Draw the inland journey before comparing ports
Ask the forwarder to write out the route: factory collection, any warehouse or inland terminal, container loading, export terminal and vessel. Identify who books each leg, who receives the cargo and who deals with a missed connection. Confirm the exact terminal rather than accepting only a city name.
For a full container, ask where the empty container is collected and where loading happens. For shared-container cargo, ask which consolidation warehouse receives your goods and which port it actually uses. With several factories, compare their combined collection routes before choosing a warehouse. See our consolidation service.
Compare bookable sailings, not port reputations
Request a dated itinerary showing the carrier, export terminal, UK arrival port and any transshipment, where cargo changes vessels. Ask whether the quoted departure is available for your cargo and what happens if the booking moves to a later vessel. A service name alone does not establish the route for your shipment.
Work backwards from the cargo receiving deadline and document deadline. Include collection, inspection release and any inland connection before judging whether the factory can catch the vessel. Compare arrival at your delivery address, including UK onward transport. Our route-check guide helps with checking disruptions.
Make the port quotes comparable
Keep the cargo, readiness date, delivery address and service scope identical across quotes. Ask each forwarder to separate factory collection, inland transport, warehouse handling, terminal charges, ocean freight and UK onward delivery. For FOB or CIF offers, confirm the named port and read the trade terms guide before comparing scopes.
Ask specifically whether a port change adds empty-container positioning, cargo transfers, storage, waiting, rebooking or document amendment charges. Record who pays if the factory misses collection or the inland leg misses the vessel. Compare the landed total, with exclusions written beside it, rather than choosing the lowest ocean freight line.
Approve a route with clear handoffs
Before booking, obtain a written route summary naming the collection address, loading location, export terminal, sailing itinerary, UK arrival port and delivery address. Add the cargo and document deadlines, each handoff contact, quote validity and exclusions. Give the forwarder written instructions early enough to arrange the move.
If the preferred sailing becomes unavailable, request the revised inland route, charges and delivery estimate before agreeing to switch ports. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can help check factory collection arrangements and compare the proposed handoffs with the quote.
Frequently asked questions
Is the nearest China port always cheapest?
No. Compare collection, inland transport, handling, ocean freight and UK delivery together. A nearby port can lose its cost advantage if the available sailing or warehouse route adds charges.
Should I choose Shanghai or Ningbo?
Request comparable quotes from your actual factory address. Check inland collection, loading location, cargo deadlines, sailing connections and UK delivery before choosing.
Can I change the export port after getting a quote?
Ask for a revised written quote first. Check changes to collection, empty-container positioning, warehouse transfers, documents and the sailing booking before agreeing.
Which port should I use for several Chinese factories?
Compare the combined collection routes to the consolidation warehouse, then its onward route to the export terminal. Ask where each supplier's goods are received and who handles delays.
