Can I change the UK port after booking?
Divert only when the carrier confirms the change and the revised route improves delivery to your premises at an acceptable total cost. Get written confirmation of document amendments, customs arrangements, haulage and outstanding charges before approving. Ask Cambridge China Bridge to coordinate the comparison.

Compare delivery outcomes before requesting a change
Ask the forwarder to compare keeping the booked route with the proposed diversion. Compare expected delivery to your premises, rather than vessel arrival alone. Establish whether the proposal changes the discharge port, adds a feeder movement or only changes inland collection. Ask the carrier to confirm availability, the amendment deadline and whether requesting the change could disrupt the existing booking.
Record the shipment’s current stage: booked, loaded, sailing or already discharged. Get the proposed vessel, terminal and onward connections in writing, with any uncertainty stated. A less congested port offers little benefit if collection capacity or warehouse availability pushes delivery back.
Agree the document and release changes
Use the existing customs document checklist for the basic paperwork. For a diversion, ask the forwarder for a change register showing each affected document or carrier record, who will amend it, the charge and confirmation of completion. Include the booking, transport document, cargo manifest, arrival notice and release instructions where affected.
Confirm whether issued originals need surrender or replacement and whether a bank or other document holder needs to agree. Ask the supplier to amend only genuinely affected invoice details; a new port is no reason to rewrite the goods description, origin or value. Check the revised records against the container and seal details. See transport documents and cargo release.
Have the broker confirm the customs route
Give the broker the proposed terminal and ask them to check the declaration’s status, goods location, arrival arrangements and any linked references. HMRC states that a cleared declaration cannot be amended or cancelled in declaration software. Obtain the broker’s proposed correction route before authorising the diversion; carrier acceptance alone does not settle the customs arrangements.
For goods needing animal, plant or food checks, ask the broker and relevant authority to confirm that the proposed inspection arrangements suit the commodity. Defra states that each border control post handles certain commodity types. Ask who will review affected notifications and certificates. If the proposal includes inland clearance, have the broker confirm how that movement would be arranged rather than assuming ordinary haulage is sufficient.
Rebook the whole inland journey
Get a fresh haulage offer from the actual proposed terminal to the delivery address. Confirm collection availability, vehicle suitability, unloading arrangements, warehouse acceptance and the empty-container return depot. Ask whether the diversion changes return instructions or creates an extra repositioning journey. Use the container delivery handoff guide to check who owns each transfer. For address or recipient amendments, see our guide to changing delivery details after dispatch.
Ask the insurer or insurance arranger to confirm cover for the revised route and any extra handling or storage. Assign someone to cancel superseded collection and warehouse bookings, but agree when to do so: cancelling before the replacement route is confirmed can leave you without either delivery arrangement.

Approve a replacement total, not a diversion fee
Request a revised total through delivery and empty-container return. Show amounts already paid, amounts still payable, cancellation charges and confirmed credits separately. Compare the remaining cost of keeping the route with the remaining cost of changing it. Keep expected credits separate until confirmed, and ask the broker to review whether revised freight affects the duty or import VAT calculation.
Include carrier amendments, replacement documents, extra sea movements, terminal handling, broker work, inspection arrangements, storage, haulage, unloading and container return where applicable. Obtain the charging basis and confirmed free time for each location. Use the port delay charges guide for those charges rather than assuming the original allowance transfers.

Frequently asked questions
Can I change the UK port after the vessel sails?
Ask the carrier through your forwarder. Establish whether a diversion is still available, what onward movement it involves and which documents need changing before comparing the complete revised cost.
Will changing port get my container delivered sooner?
Compare expected delivery to your premises. Earlier discharge may be offset by customs arrangements, collection availability, extra handling or a longer inland journey.
Does carrier approval also update my customs declaration?
Get separate confirmation from the broker. Ask them to check the declaration status, location and arrival arrangements, and identify any correction work before you approve.
What should a port diversion quote include?
A replacement total covering documents, carrier and terminal charges, broker work, applicable checks, storage, inland delivery and container return, with credits, exclusions and further charging triggers stated.
