Port of Shanghai: What Ships From Shanghai and Transit Times

Shanghai serves the Yangtze River Delta, with container terminals mainly at Yangshan, Waigaoqiao and Wusong. Selected October–November 2026 schedules give 40–41 days to Felixstowe, 37–38 to Rotterdam and 11–15 to Long Beach. These are planned port-to-port examples, not delivery guarantees.

Where is the Port of Shanghai?

Shanghai serves the Yangtze River Delta. The port operator’s services page says its container terminals are mainly distributed across Yangshan, Waigaoqiao and Wusong. Yangshan is a deep-water port area; a booking described simply as Shanghai does not identify the receiving terminal.

Shanghai Customs guidance published in 2022 describes regional port connections through which export cargo travels by barge to Yangshan for loading onto ocean vessels. This illustrates why goods shipped from Shanghai need not have been manufactured in Shanghai itself; confirm current arrangements for your shipment.

Compare the factory-to-port movement, available sailing and destination arrangements before choosing Shanghai. Our China export-port comparison covers that decision.

What ships from Shanghai and its hinterland?

A 2024 Shanghai government report citing Shanghai Customs statistics identifies cars and high-tech products among Yangtze River Delta exports. It also describes regional carmakers exporting vehicles through Shanghai’s Haitong terminal in Waigaoqiao. Regional export statistics are not a breakdown of Shanghai’s container cargo.

Textile raw materials are another documented trade. Maersk’s 2024 SH3 launch announcement describes a service starting at Shanghai and explains how its China–Bangladesh network supports Chinese textile raw-material exporters and Bangladeshi garment manufacturers. These examples describe different supply chains, rather than a ranking of the port’s exports.

Give the forwarder the actual product description, packaging, dimensions and weight. Identify any batteries, liquids, chemicals, temperature requirements or unusually heavy pieces, and ask the carrier to confirm acceptance requirements.

How long does shipping from Shanghai take?

The table calculates calendar days from scheduled Shanghai departure to the first scheduled arrival at the named destination. Each range uses the two identified voyages in OOCL’s schedules, rather than an industry average.

The LL1 and LL6 documents are dated 18 October 2026; PCC1 is dated 17 October 2026. These schedule examples can change. The European examples apply to the named ports, while Long Beach is a US West Coast destination.

Allow separately for collection, export preparation, consolidation, destination unloading, cargo release, customs clearance and delivery. Obtain the current itinerary for your booking, including any transshipment.

Will my shipment use Yangshan or Waigaoqiao?

Follow the terminal stated in your confirmed booking and receiving instructions. Obtain the terminal name, receiving address, vessel and voyage before dispatching a truck or arranging a feeder connection.

Terminal assignments can change. Maersk’s Northern Star advisory announced a move from Waigaoqiao to Yangshan effective with Maersk Innoshima’s call on 3 May 2026. This is a documented service-specific change, not a rule that all Shanghai sailings use Yangshan.

For inland or consolidated cargo, ask where the provider first receives your goods and how they connect to the ocean vessel. Confirm the loading terminal separately from the consolidation warehouse.

Which Shanghai shipping cut-offs must I meet?

Request a written deadline list for the actual booking. OOCL FreightSmart’s concierge-service terms distinguish container-yard, shipping-instruction and verified gross mass deadlines. OOCL’s Shanghai service page directs customers to sailing schedules and local notifications for operating changes.

Confirm when the terminal starts accepting containers, the final gate-in time, shipping-instruction submission, verified gross mass submission and export customs arrangements. Record the applicable time zone and who handles each milestone.

For a small shipment sharing a container, obtain the consolidation warehouse’s receiving deadline as well. Ask whether inspection, repacking or missing documents could prevent your goods joining the planned sailing.

If a deadline is missed, get revised booking and equipment instructions before proceeding. Confirm the next sailing and any additional handling or storage charges in writing.

What changes around Chinese New Year?

Obtain shipment-specific deadlines rather than applying a general holiday date to every order. Confirm the factory’s final production and dispatch dates, collection arrangements, warehouse receiving deadline and vessel-specific cut-offs.

Maersk’s planning guide for Chinese New Year 2026 identifies disruption to production, labour availability, trucking and warehousing. It does not establish a Shanghai port closure or a confirmed deadline for a 2027 shipment.

For the next holiday, use the Chinese New Year 2027 planning guide, then confirm the order’s deadlines with the supplier and forwarder. Agree what happens if the goods fail inspection or miss the intended sailing.

Check destination collection arrangements and empty-container return instructions before departure. Our demurrage, detention and storage guide explains how to plan around those charges.

A short UK example: customs value and import VAT

For imports into Great Britain, HMRC says transaction value is the first valuation method to try. Where applicable, adjust the price paid or payable to include transport, loading, handling and insurance to the UK place of introduction, alongside other required adjustments. Do not add costs already included.

For import VAT, start with customs value and add applicable duties and import charges, excluding VAT itself, plus relevant incidental expenses to the first UK destination and any further UK destination known at importation. Avoid double counting and give the declarant an itemised freight breakdown.

For other destinations, ask the declarant to confirm the applicable customs valuation and tax requirements for your goods and transaction.

What should I send for a Shanghai shipping quote?

Provide collection and delivery addresses, product specifications, quantity, packed dimensions, gross weight, cargo-ready date and special handling details.

Ask for the carrier service, loading terminal, direct or transshipment routing, departure and arrival estimates, applicable cut-offs, included charges and destination costs payable separately.

Share any supplier quote and proposed delivery terms with your sourcing or shipping provider, and agree the scope and responsibilities before work starts.

Frequently asked questions

Is Yangshan the same as the Port of Shanghai?

Yangshan is a deep-water port area within the wider Shanghai port complex. Confirm the receiving terminal for your sailing rather than relying on the port name alone.

Can goods from a factory outside Shanghai ship through Shanghai?

Yes. Shanghai Customs’ 2022 guidance describes regional barge connections to Yangshan. Ask the forwarder to confirm current arrangements and quote the complete movement from your factory to the booked ocean vessel.

What kinds of goods leave Shanghai?

The sources document regional vehicle exports through Shanghai, regional high-tech exports, and a Shanghai-origin service within a network supporting textile raw-material trade. They do not establish a container-export ranking.

How long should I allow for shipping from Shanghai to Europe?

The selected schedules give 40–41 days to Felixstowe and 37–38 days to Rotterdam. These are port-to-port examples for identified voyages; add the other stages of your shipment.

Can I use the Long Beach estimate for delivery anywhere in America?

No. The sampled 11–15 days ends at scheduled Long Beach arrival. Obtain a separate itinerary for other ports, inland transport, cargo release and final delivery.

Can my driver choose between Yangshan and Waigaoqiao?

Use the terminal and receiving instructions for the confirmed booking. Obtain written confirmation of any change before sending the truck.

What is the last date to ship before Chinese New Year?

Get order-specific deadlines covering factory dispatch, collection, consolidation and the booked vessel. Do not use the holiday date alone to set your cargo-ready deadline.

Does the vessel’s arrival date mean my goods are ready to collect?

Confirm unloading, cargo availability, release, customs clearance and any collection appointment separately before arranging delivery.
