Buying a home lift from China: UK checks
Before ordering, get a UK lift specialist to review the exact model and property, confirm its classification, allocate installation responsibilities and agree a workable rescue and maintenance plan. Make the order conditional on resolving these points. Ask Cambridge China Bridge to obtain the factory evidence.

Classify the actual equipment before comparing quotes
“Home lift” is a sales description. Give your specialist the rated speed, travel, carrier and enclosure drawings, door arrangements, controls, intended users and installation address. The Lifts Regulations exclude lifting appliances whose speed is not greater than 0.15m/s. Ask for a written classification explaining whether the lift or machinery route applies, which standards support it and how conformity will be assessed.
Ask the specialist to distinguish a conventional passenger lift, lifting platform and through-floor lift from the actual design. Match the proposed documentation to the ordered configuration, including doors and safety components. Establish the destination as England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland before requesting a compliance review. Do not release a deposit while the classification or evidence route remains unresolved. For purchases agreed during a home visit, see our guide to cancelling home fittings orders.
Survey the building before accepting factory dimensions
Arrange a property survey with the lift specialist and a suitable building designer or structural engineer. Review floor openings, supporting structure, fixing loads, pit and overhead space, landing access, electrical supply and the delivery route. Ask how the installation affects fire separation and escape routes. Factory drawings should show the agreed building interfaces, rather than leave the builder to interpret a catalogue. For rented or leasehold homes, see our guide to landlord permission for imported fixtures. For listed homes, see our guide to China-made replacement fixtures in listed homes. If also considering a wheelchair ramp, see our home wheelchair ramp safety guide.
For England and Wales, government guidance says to check whether building regulations approval is needed before changing buildings in certain ways. Ask the building team to confirm the applicable approval route for the property's location. Allocate responsibility for submissions, structural calculations, inspections and completion records. Agree who resolves a mismatch between the surveyed building and the factory drawings before manufacture. If your home alterations also include a sauna, see our UK sauna installation checks. For satellite dishes, see our home satellite dish installation guide.
Name the party responsible for the completed installation
For a lift within the Great Britain lifts regime, the installer is the person taking responsibility for design, manufacture, installation and placing it on that market. Identify who accepts that role before ordering. Ask that party to review the factory's design and proposed assessment route. A contractor offering assembly labour alone may not be offering responsibility for the completed lift.
Write down who handles unloading, building works, electrical connection, assembly, testing, commissioning and handover. Ask who signs the completed installation documents and what evidence remains outstanding after shipment. Use the installation and commissioning guide for the general project arrangements, then add lift-specific acceptance checks for landing doors, interlocks, levelling and protective devices. See our guide to resolving faulty home fitting installation for installation complaints.
Prove the rescue arrangement at the property
Ask the specialist to explain what happens during power failure, a stopped lift between landings and an occupant unable to operate the controls. Distinguish automatic lowering from a rescue procedure that requires someone to attend. Agree who answers an alarm, who can reach the property, how they gain access and who is trained to release occupants using the manufacturer's procedure. For separate home backup power planning, see our petrol generator buying guide.
Have the installer demonstrate the alarm connection, backup operation and rescue arrangements safely at handover, without deliberately trapping anyone. Check communication coverage at the installed location and agree what happens if that connection fails. Keep rescue instructions and access arrangements available to the attending personnel. Do not accept an overseas support number as the complete local rescue plan.

Secure a maintenance provider before committing
Send the exact model documentation to a prospective UK lift maintenance company and obtain written acceptance of the equipment and address. Ask it to propose servicing, fault attendance and any separate examination arrangements for the intended use. HSE states that lifts provided for workers in workplaces are subject to the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations. Describe any work-related use rather than relying on the “home lift” label.
Check that the maintainer can obtain diagnostic access, controller settings, suitable parts and factory support. Agree coverage, exclusions, escalation and what happens if a proprietary component becomes unavailable. Use the spare-parts support guide for the detailed parts agreement. Add the specialist's unresolved items to your checks before paying the balance, with a named owner for each.
Frequently asked questions
Does a home lift from China fall under lift or machinery rules?
Ask a UK lift specialist to classify the exact design. The sales name alone does not establish the applicable route.
What building work should I check before ordering a home lift?
Survey the floor openings, structure, fixing loads, pit, overhead space, electrics and delivery access. Ask the building team to resolve fire separation, escape routes and the applicable approval route before accepting drawings.
Is automatic lowering enough for a home lift emergency?
Ask what happens if lowering fails or the occupant cannot use the controls. Agree an alarm contact, local attendance, access and a trained rescue procedure. Have the installer demonstrate the arrangement safely.
Can a UK company maintain a Chinese home lift?
Obtain written acceptance from a maintenance company for the exact model and address before ordering. Check diagnostic access, parts, factory support, attendance coverage and exclusions. A factory warranty does not establish local service.
