Buying a Petrol Generator from China for Home Backup
Before ordering, confirm a safe outdoor location, match the output to your essential appliances, and have an electrician approve the connection and protection. Never feed a wall socket: fixed wiring needs a changeover arrangement that prevents backfeeding. For factory checks in China, speak to Cambridge China Bridge.

Choose the outdoor location before the generator
Run a portable petrol generator outdoors in an open, well-ventilated position where exhaust cannot collect or drift through building openings. Keep exhaust away from doors, windows and ventilation intakes, including neighbours’ properties. Never run it inside a home, garage, shed or conservatory, even with doors open.
Review the proposed location against the manufacturer's instructions before buying. Consider wind direction, nearby walls and the route for cables. Ask how the unit can be protected from rain without enclosing it or obstructing cooling and exhaust. If you cannot provide a suitable outdoor location, choose another backup approach.
Plan for carbon monoxide and fuel safety
Carbon monoxide can kill. Headaches, tiredness, difficulty thinking clearly and feeling sick can indicate poisoning. Fit audible carbon monoxide alarms in the home and follow their placement and testing instructions. An alarm or an automatic generator shutdown feature does not make an unsafe exhaust location acceptable.
If an alarm sounds or poisoning is suspected, get everyone into fresh air and seek urgent medical help. Do not re-enter until advised it is safe. Agree a fuel-storage and refuelling plan before delivery: follow the manual, keep petrol away from ignition sources, and stop the engine and let it cool before refuelling.
Match the output to the appliances
List the appliances you want to run together and obtain their running and starting requirements. Ask the factory for continuous output, starting capability, voltage, frequency, phase, socket ratings and output-quality test results for the exact model. Have your electrician compare these with the appliance labels and manufacturers’ instructions. Size against continuous output and starting demands, rather than the advertised peak rating.
Confirm suitability for boiler controls, refrigeration and sensitive electronics with their manufacturers. Ask for the generator wiring diagram, neutral-to-earth arrangement, protective devices and English manual before ordering. A socket adaptor changes the connector; it does not establish electrical compatibility. Use our electrical import guide for the wider product-document checks.
Have the electrician design the connection
Decide whether to power individual appliances through suitable leads or supply selected home circuits. Have an electrician approve the generator and the complete arrangement before purchase. For fixed wiring, ask them to design and install a dedicated generator inlet and interlocked changeover arrangement that disconnects the mains before connecting generator power and prevents backfeeding into the public network.
Never connect the generator to a household wall socket or use a lead with exposed plug pins at both ends. Simply switching off the main switch is no substitute for the designed changeover arrangement. Ask the electrician to resolve earthing, neutral switching, fault protection and residual-current protection, then test operation on generator power and the return to mains power. Request written operating instructions and test records.

Turn the agreed design into purchase checks
Put the electrician-approved model, ratings, socket configuration, wiring diagram and accessories into the purchase specification. Arrange an independent inspection and recorded load test against that specification, including starting behaviour, output stability, protective functions, leaks and shutdown controls. Our inspection guide explains the inspection process; a factory test does not approve the home installation.
Agree spare parts, servicing support and what happens if the delivered configuration differs. Use our checks before paying the balance for the payment checkpoint. Cambridge China Bridge’s own staff in China can coordinate factory checks against the agreed brief. Have the UK electrician commission the actual generator with the intended appliances before relying on it during a power cut.
Frequently asked questions
Can I run a petrol generator in a garage with the door open?
No. Use an open outdoor location where exhaust cannot collect or enter your home or neighbouring buildings. An open garage door or a carbon monoxide alarm does not make the garage suitable.
Can I plug a generator into a house socket?
No. Never feed a wall socket or use a lead with exposed plug pins at both ends. For home circuits, have an electrician install and test an inlet and changeover arrangement that prevents backfeeding.
How do I choose the generator output for my home?
List essential appliances and their running and starting demands. Have an electrician check continuous output, starting capability, voltage, frequency, sockets and protection against the intended loads.
What should I ask a Chinese generator factory for?
Request the exact model’s ratings, wiring diagram, neutral-to-earth details, English manual and supporting test reports. Agree a recorded load test and inspection of the configuration that will ship.
