Getting started

Can I install a China-bought satellite dish at home?

Yes, potentially, but check the proposed installation before ordering. Confirm the planning position for your address, record existing antennas, ask for any property-owner consent and have an installer assess reception and mounting safety. Send the agreed dish specification to Cambridge China Bridge.

Check planning for your address

In England, a satellite dish on a house or within its grounds may qualify as permitted development, subject to the applicable limits and conditions. Start with your local planning authority. For a home in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, ask the council which guidance applies rather than using England's householder guidance.

Send your address, property type, photographs and a sketch of the proposed location. Ask about local restrictions, conditions on earlier planning permissions and conservation-area status. Local withdrawal of permitted development rights can mean a planning application is needed. If the building is listed, alterations affecting its special character require listed building consent, irrespective of planning permission.

Record existing antennas before choosing a dish

Photograph existing dishes and other antennas on the building and in its grounds, including equipment you no longer use. Label which you intend to retain, replace or remove. Ask the council which equipment counts towards the relevant antenna limits; do not assume unused equipment can be ignored.

Request a dimensioned drawing showing the dish's overall shape, depth and mounting position. Ask the council to assess antenna size, volume, roof height and any chimney mounting against the applicable rules. For a flat, describe the whole building and any communal equipment so the council can identify the appropriate planning route.

Ask the landlord or building owner

If you rent or hold a lease, check the agreement and ask the landlord, freeholder or managing agent about consent before ordering. Request written agreement covering the actual dish, bracket, mounting location, cable entry and access arrangements. Ask whether an existing communal system could meet your needs.

Agree who pays for installation, maintenance, removal and making good the wall or roof. Keep the property-owner correspondence alongside the council's response. Ask for clarification if either response concerns a different position or model from the installation you intend to buy.

Have an installer assess reception and safe mounting

Ask a satellite installer to check the intended satellite, reception at your address, an unobstructed signal path and compatibility with your receiver. Have them assess wall or roof condition, wind exposure, bracket loading, suitable fixings and cable routing. Ask how penetrations will be weatherproofed and whether electrical protection needs specialist assessment.

HSE says work at height must be properly planned, supervised and carried out by competent people using suitable equipment. Ask your contractor to explain safe access, precautions against falls and falling equipment, and access for later maintenance. Obtain the site assessment before accepting a factory's standard bracket or fixing kit.

Order against the checked installation

Give Cambridge China Bridge the installer-reviewed drawing and the agreed location. Specify dish dimensions, material, finish, bracket interfaces, mounting instructions, compatible receiving components and protective packaging. Use our product specification guide to turn these details into the factory's written order specification.

Release the order once the planning position, property consent and installation method are settled. Request photographs and measurements of the supplied model before dispatch, and refer any proposed substitution back to the installer. Use our spare-parts planning guide for replacement components and support arrangements.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need planning permission for a satellite dish?

It depends on the property and proposed installation. England's householder permitted development route has limits and conditions. Send the council your location sketch, dish drawing and existing-antenna record before ordering.

Does an old satellite dish count if I do not use it?

Include it in your photographs and antenna record. Ask the council how existing equipment affects your proposal, and have an installer assess removal or replacement before buying another dish.

Can I put a satellite dish on a rented home?

Check your tenancy agreement and ask the landlord for written agreement covering the location, fixings, cable entry and removal. Also settle the planning position with the council.

Can I use the mounting bolts supplied with the dish?

Have the installer assess them against the actual wall or roof, bracket and exposure. Ask the factory for fixing specifications; included bolts alone do not establish that the mounting is suitable.
