Buying a home wind turbine from China: checks

Before ordering, have the proposed site and exact turbine assessed for planning, neighbour noise, structural support and electrical installation. Ask your installer to confirm the network connection route and documents needed before accepting the model. Coordinate the factory evidence through Cambridge China Bridge.

Check the planning position for your address

Send your local planning authority a site plan showing the proposed turbine, mounting arrangement, boundaries and neighbouring homes. Ask it to check height, blade clearance, swept area, protected land and existing turbines or air source heat pumps. The domestic permitted development rules discussed here apply to England. For a home elsewhere in the UK, ask the local authority to assess the proposal under its applicable rules.

In England, planning conditions or local directions can remove permitted development rights. Check your property's planning history before relying on them. Both building-mounted and standalone domestic turbine routes require compliance with the MCS Planning Standards or equivalent standards. Ask for a written assessment against the complete conditions, rather than accepting the supplier's claim that a small turbine needs no planning application.

Get a noise assessment for the proposed location

Request acoustic test evidence for the exact turbine and its operating modes. Ask an acoustic assessor to explain the measurement basis, wind conditions, tonal characteristics and predicted noise at neighbouring homes. A factory video or a description such as 'quiet' cannot show how the proposed installation will affect those homes. Include vibration transmitted through the building in the review.

Ask the planning authority which assessment method it expects for your proposal. For an onshore wind planning application, the government's current assessment and rating of wind turbine noise guidance should be used. Keep the assessment, site assumptions and any proposed operating restrictions together. Have the assessor revisit them if the turbine, mounting position or control settings change.

Have the support designed for your home

Give a structural engineer the turbine's mass, thrust, torque, vibration information and operating and survival load cases. For roof mounting, request a review of the load path through the brackets, roof and supporting structure. For a separate mast, request a foundation and anchorage design based on the ground conditions. A generic mounting kit is not a site-specific structural assessment.

Check access for erection, inspection, maintenance and safe removal. Ask who supplies the mast, foundations, fixings, corrosion protection and weatherproofing, and who accepts responsibility for their design. Building regulations approval is separate from planning permission, and you might need both. Ask building control to confirm the approval route for the proposed structural and electrical work before ordering.

Agree the electrical design with the installer

Choose an installer with relevant wind turbine experience and ask them to review the complete system before purchase. Send the generator, controller, inverter and any battery specifications, wiring diagrams and English instructions. Ask for a written design covering cable routes, earthing, protective devices, isolation, braking and disposal of excess generated power. Confirm how the system behaves during faults and maintenance.

England's Approved Document P addresses electrical safety in dwellings, including guidance on notification, inspection and testing. Ask the installer which work needs notification, how compliance will be evidenced and which certificates you will receive. Our renewable equipment guide covers the broader product-document and installer-acceptance checks; use this site review alongside it.

Confirm the network connection route

For a system operating alongside the electricity network, ask the installer and local network operator to confirm whether the proposal can be connected and notified afterwards or needs authorisation before work. Have them assess existing solar generation, batteries and proposed export controls together with the turbine. Obtain confirmation for the exact generator, controller and inverter combination.

The device owner is responsible for ensuring that network notification is received and, where the application route requires it, authorisation is granted before work. An equipment model without type-test evidence may need additional documentation. Ask for the connection submission, operator correspondence and commissioning records. Include loss-of-mains behaviour in the installer's review.

Make the accepted design part of the order

Put the accepted model, controller, inverter, mounting drawings and document versions into the purchase specification. Require the supplier to refer substitutions back to you and your installer before production. Ask for a site-based generation estimate that accounts for obstructions and turbulence, rather than treating rated power as expected household output. Agree spare parts, servicing and fault support.

Use our factory audit guide to assess manufacturing capability, and our balance-payment checklist for the release decision. Add turbine-specific checks of identification, assembly, controller operation, braking and packing to the inspection brief. Cambridge China Bridge can coordinate factory evidence through its staff in China; obtain the UK site's technical acceptance before committing to the equipment.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need planning permission for a home wind turbine?

Have the local planning authority assess your address and proposal. In England, domestic permitted development depends on the complete conditions, and local restrictions can remove those rights.

Is the supplier's noise figure enough?

Request its test basis and a site assessment for neighbouring homes. Ask the planning authority which method it expects, and include tonal noise, operating modes and building vibration in the assessor's brief.

Can I mount a Chinese wind turbine on my roof?

Have a structural engineer assess the turbine loads, fixings and supporting building. Get the installer's electrical design and the planning and building control position checked before buying.

What should my installer check before I order?

The exact equipment combination, electrical protection, earthing, braking, mounting design and network connection route. Ask for written acceptance of the documents and a list of the commissioning records you will receive.
