Importing a home pottery kiln: installation checks
Before ordering, have a UK electrician assess the kiln's electrical demand against your home's available supply, and a kiln specialist review ventilation, clearances, floor loading and heat protection. Agree who will install, test and commission the exact model. Request the factory information through Cambridge China Bridge.

Get the exact model reviewed before ordering
This checklist focuses on an electric pottery kiln for private home use. Send your electrician and kiln specialist the proposed location, photographs, access route and factory installation manual. Obtain the nameplate details, wiring diagram, electrical demand, loaded weight, stand design, ventilation requirements and clearance drawings. A brochure saying the kiln is suitable for home use is insufficient.
Ask each specialist for a written list of acceptable conditions, missing information and necessary alterations before you commit. Put the agreed configuration into your product specification. Our own-use import guide covers the separate compliance questions. For a gas-fired kiln, arrange a separate assessment by a suitably qualified gas specialist.
Have the electrician check supply capacity
Ask the electrician to match the factory's voltage, frequency, phase arrangement and maximum current demand to the actual property supply. Include other appliances likely to run during firing. Have them inspect the incoming supply, consumer unit, earthing, cable route and proposed connection, then specify the circuit, protective devices and accessible isolation. Ask whether the network operator needs to assess any supply upgrade.
Agree who will undertake and certify the electrical work, and ask about notification or approval for your location. GOV.UK explains that an installer registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify work within the scheme's scope. Confirm that route is applicable locally. Obtain written confirmation of the connection arrangement rather than assuming an existing socket or a plug adaptor is suitable.
Design ventilation for the firing process
HSE guidance for schools and craft studios recommends adequate ventilation with free air movement. Use it as a safety reference for the specialist's home assessment, rather than treating studio guidance as a household legal requirement. Tell the specialist which clay bodies, glazes and firing programmes you intend to use so the assessment covers the actual process.
Ask for a ventilation design compatible with the kiln, including fume capture, outdoor discharge, replacement air and removal of room heat. Check the discharge position against windows, air intakes and neighbouring properties. Agree how ventilation performance will be checked during commissioning. Do not accept an open window as the entire plan without a specialist's assessment.
Check clearances, floor and delivery access
Have the specialist mark the manufacturer's clearances on a room plan, including the space above the kiln, around cables and ventilation equipment, and for opening, loading and servicing it. Inspect concealed timber, shelving and nearby storage as well as visible wall finishes. HSE's studio guidance advises against storing combustible equipment and materials close to kilns. Plan how children, pets and visitors will be kept away from hot surfaces.
Check the floor's load capacity using the kiln, stand, kiln furniture and intended load together. Ask a structural professional where capacity is uncertain, especially with a suspended floor. Have the kiln specialist assess stability, floor combustibility and heat protection; tiles alone do not establish that the construction beneath is suitable. Confirm the unpacking route, lifting arrangements and final positioning before dispatch.

Book commissioning and agree the handover
Before purchase, obtain a UK specialist's agreement to commission the exact imported model. Define who connects it, who checks the kiln controls and safety devices, who verifies ventilation, and who supervises the manufacturer's initial firing procedure. Ask how transport damage, missing instructions or failed checks will be handled. Agree that unresolved safety defects stop the handover.
Use a written site acceptance plan covering electrical test records, controller settings, observed firing behaviour and ventilation checks. Request instruction on isolation, fault response, cooling and maintenance, with a written commissioning record and named support contact. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can obtain factory drawings and clarify the supplied configuration for your UK specialists.
Frequently asked questions
Can a pottery kiln run from a normal home socket?
Only after your electrician checks the exact kiln demand, connection instructions and available circuit capacity. A supplied plug or adaptor does not establish suitability.
Can I put a pottery kiln in my garage?
Ask a kiln specialist to assess ventilation, clearances, stored combustibles, floor construction and access. Ask the electrician to check the garage supply against the kiln's demand.
Is a tiled floor suitable for a pottery kiln?
Tiles alone cannot establish suitability. Check the supporting structure, loaded weight, stand stability and heat protection with the kiln specialist, involving a structural professional where needed.
Who should commission an imported pottery kiln?
Arrange a UK kiln specialist willing to support the exact model, with an electrician responsible for the electrical installation and testing. Agree the firing checks, records and handover before ordering.
