Buying lights from China: electrician checks
Before ordering, ask your electrician to review the exact fitting and driver against your home's supply, wiring, dimmer and proposed position. Agree any installation changes, bathroom suitability and building-control route before paying a deposit. Cambridge China Bridge can gather the factory information for that review.

Give the electrician the exact fitting details
Send the model reference, rating-label photographs, wiring diagram, installation instructions and details of the supplied driver and light source. Include dimensions, weight, mounting method and the proposed room and position. Ask the electrician to record whether the fitting is suitable, suitable with specified changes, or awaiting evidence.
Our electrical imports guide covers product compliance and factory documents. This review adds the installation decision for your home. Ask the factory to confirm that the documents describe the configuration it will actually ship, including any separate driver or controller.
Check the supply, wiring and physical installation
Ask the electrician to compare the fitting's input voltage and frequency with the available supply. For a separate driver, check its output voltage or current, supported light source and connection arrangement. Have them assess the existing circuit, protective devices, earthing and whether the fitting needs an earth connection.
Check cable entry, terminals, ceiling support, cut-out dimensions, ventilation, insulation clearances and access for driver replacement. For recessed lights, ask about the ceiling construction and how the proposed installation handles fire and heat risks. Put agreed installation constraints in the product specification before the factory prepares the order.
Review the complete dimming combination
Give the electrician the dimmer's exact make and model, the intended group of lights and the driver's dimming instructions. Ask them to compare the dimming method, supported load range, switching arrangement and any neutral-wire needs. A supplier's description of a fitting as dimmable does not establish compatibility with your existing control.
Arrange a sample trial with the proposed fitting, driver and dimmer. Have the electrician check starting, adjustment through the usable range, flicker, buzzing and behaviour after switching off and on. Record the accepted combination and prohibit unapproved driver substitutions using the sample-to-production guide.
Review the actual bathroom position
Provide a measured layout showing the bath, shower tray or open shower, shower head, ceiling height and proposed light, switch and driver positions. Ask the electrician to identify the bathroom zones and assess the fitting's enclosure protection, supply arrangement and protective measures for that precise location.
Request supporting evidence for the claimed water protection and the manufacturer's permitted mounting positions. Ask how seals, cable entries and installation orientation affect the proposed use. Record any relocation or different fitting the electrician recommends before ordering; a generic bathroom-light label is insufficient for this review.
Agree building-control steps and the handover
The government's Approved Document P guidance discussed here is for England. Before installation, ask whether the proposed work is notifiable, specifically flagging any new circuit, consumer-unit replacement or circuit changes near a bath or shower. For homes in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, ask the electrician and local building-control service to confirm the applicable route.
An installer registered with an appropriate competent person scheme can self-certify work within its scope. Check their registration and agree who handles notification; if that route is unavailable, discuss approval and inspection with building control before work starts. England's guidance also calls for non-notifiable electrical installation work to be inspected, tested and certificated. Agree the electrical paperwork, any building-control certificate and operating instructions you will receive.
Frequently asked questions
What should I send my electrician before buying lights?
Send the exact model, label photographs, wiring diagram, instructions, driver details, dimensions and proposed position. Include the existing dimmer model and a bathroom layout where relevant.
Will a dimmable Chinese light work with my dimmer?
Ask the electrician to check the exact driver and dimmer combination, supported load and wiring. Trial a sample for starting, adjustment, flicker and buzzing before approving the order.
Can I use a Chinese light above my shower?
Have the electrician assess the measured position, bathroom zone, enclosure protection, supply and installation instructions. Request evidence for water-protection claims before choosing the fitting.
Do I need building-control approval for imported lights?
Ask the electrician to assess the installation work and local route before starting. Importing the fitting does not answer that question. Agree notification, inspection and completion paperwork where applicable.
