First Amazon UK order: direct to FBA or via me?
For a first small order, receive stock yourself or at a UK preparation warehouse if labels, packing or batch quality still need proving. Send directly to FBA only when those checks, customs arrangements and a refusal recovery route are agreed. Cambridge China Bridge can coordinate factory-side checks through its own staff in China.

Choose where you can resolve uncertainty
Receiving stock yourself gives you a chance to inspect the batch and correct preparation before forwarding it. A UK preparation warehouse can provide that checkpoint if you lack space or equipment. Prefer this route when the product, packaging or factory is unfamiliar, or when you have not verified the finished labels.
Direct delivery can avoid an intermediate handling stage, but moves your practical checking opportunity to China. Choose it when the actual batch and finished packing have been verified, the carrier has confirmed the receiving arrangements, and a fallback warehouse is ready. Use our e-commerce sourcing guide for upstream product and packaging decisions.
Compare costs through to saleable stock
Ask for comparable written quotes against the same carton details and checking brief. For direct delivery, include factory preparation, inspection, freight, clearance, final delivery and booking arrangements. For receiving first, add unloading, receiving checks, storage, labels, repacking and onward transport. Include your own labour, materials and usable workspace rather than treating home preparation as free.
Separate routine costs from possible recovery charges. Ask who pays for waiting, refused delivery, diversion, storage, correction and another dispatch. State whether preparation covers each unit or only cartons, and whether the warehouse merely counts arrivals or checks products. Compare the cost of stock ready for sale, rather than the freight headline.
Write a receiving and release brief
For either route, identify the checks, who performs them and who approves dispatch. Compare the batch with the approved sample; check product variants, contents, visible condition and packaging. Ask for barcode scan results against the intended listing, plus photographs of finished units and cartons. Set the inspection scope using our quality inspection guide.
For a UK stop, ask the receiver to record arrival condition, reconcile quantities and separate discrepancies before forwarding. For direct delivery, obtain the factory-side results before dispatch and give the carrier the current shipment instructions from your seller account. Amazon receiving confirmation should not be your only evidence of product condition. Keep unresolved safety concerns on hold.
Name the importer and secure the records
Before booking either route, identify the actual importer and agree whether the customs representative acts directly or indirectly. Write down whose EORI and VAT details will be used, who funds duty and import VAT, and who receives the declaration and release evidence. Keep the fulfilment delivery address separate from this responsibility record. Our UK customs clearance guide covers the clearance steps.
HMRC says appointing someone to handle customs does not remove your responsibility for declaration due diligence. Ask for the completed entry and check it against the invoice and packing list. Arrange access to the applicable C79 certificate or postponed import VAT statement, and keep it with the shipment records. HMRC says import VAT certificates can help support recovery as input tax on your VAT Return.
Arrange refusal recovery before dispatch
Give the carrier a named fallback warehouse, contact details and a written process for seeking your diversion approval. Confirm that the warehouse can receive, isolate and inspect the goods, and quote transport, storage and correction separately. Agree who reports a refusal, preserves the written reason and photographs, and confirms the physical location of the stock.
Distinguish delivery refused while stock remains with the carrier from goods already received into Amazon's network. The recovery route depends on custody; do not assume a vehicle can collect either situation. Follow our Amazon rejected-stock guide if refusal occurs. For the first order, choose the route whose checks and fallback you can actually operate.
Frequently asked questions
Should my first Amazon UK order come to me first?
Prefer receiving first when labels, packing or batch quality remain unproven. Use your premises only if you can inspect and prepare the stock; otherwise consider a UK preparation warehouse.
Is shipping directly from China to FBA cheaper?
It may avoid intermediate handling, but compare inspection, preparation, delivery and possible recovery charges. Receiving yourself also costs labour, materials, space and onward transport.
Who handles customs for a direct FBA shipment?
Identify the actual importer and appoint the customs representative before booking. Agree whose EORI and VAT details are used, how taxes are handled, and who supplies the declaration and VAT evidence.
What if Amazon refuses my delivery?
Obtain the written reason and confirm who physically holds the stock. Use the agreed fallback warehouse for carrier-held goods; confirm the available removal arrangements for stock already inside Amazon's network.
