Getting started

Buying a campervan battery and charger from China

Have a competent campervan electrical installer review the exact battery, every charging source and your loads before ordering. Agree charge settings, protection, cable sizing, mounting, isolation and commissioning checks in writing. Ask for factory checks against that brief through Cambridge China Bridge.

Start with the campervan’s actual electrical system

Give a competent campervan electrical installer the vehicle details, existing wiring diagram, equipment labels and photographs of the battery compartment. List appliances, their starting demands and what you expect to run together. Ask the installer to assess usable capacity and discharge capability against your intended use. A leisure-battery label or matching nominal voltage does not establish suitability.

Request the exact battery chemistry, model, terminal arrangement, weight, dimensions, charging limits and installation manual before paying. Record which existing components can remain and which need replacing. Our vehicle modification guide covers the wider vehicle and insurer review; this guide adds the electrical purchase brief.

Review every charging source

Map the alternator connection, existing split-charge relay, solar controller, campsite mains charger and any inverter-charger. Have the installer review each source’s charging profile, current limit and temperature controls against the battery manufacturer’s instructions. Include the combined charging current when sources operate together. HSE battery guidance advises against exceeding the manufacturer’s maximum charging rate.

For alternator charging, ask about smart-alternator behaviour, engine-off starter-battery protection and whether a current-limited battery-to-battery charger is needed. Do not accept a lithium replacement as a drop-in upgrade without this review. For the mains charger, confirm supply compatibility, earthing and the campervan’s mains protection; use our charger safety guide for the product assessment.

Check battery-management compatibility

For lithium batteries, establish whether battery management is internal or requires an external controller. Ask how it handles cell imbalance, excessive charging or discharge, and charging outside the permitted temperature range. If heating is offered, ask how charging is prevented until the cells are warm enough. Obtain written limits and operating behaviour for the supplied configuration.

Have the installer confirm how every charger and load responds when battery protection operates, including shutdown, restart and alternator protection. Where communication is needed, match the protocol, connections and supported firmware. Ask whether equalisation or desulphation modes must be disabled for the chosen battery. Battery protection does not replace correctly selected cable fuses or accessible isolation.

Approve fuses and cable sizing together

Ask for a wiring drawing identifying each cable, fuse, distribution point and return path. Have the installer select cable cross-section using maximum operating current, starting demand, the complete outgoing and return route, voltage drop, temperature and cable grouping. Include the terminals and connectors in the assessment. Battery capacity alone is not a cable-sizing method.

Specify battery-side positive protection close to the terminal and branch protection appropriate to the cables. Ask which cables can receive fault current from either end and how each source is protected. Check fuse voltage rating and fault-breaking capability against the battery’s possible fault current. Include covered terminals, protected cable penetrations, strain relief, suitable crimped lugs and manufacturer-specified tightening in the installation brief.

Resolve mounting and isolation before ordering

Have the installer approve the mounting orientation, restraint, supporting structure and access for maintenance. Account for braking, vibration and an accident, rather than merely stopping movement while parked. Check moisture exposure, nearby heat and the manufacturer’s cooling clearances. For lead-acid batteries, resolve gas ventilation and any external vent connection; a sealed or maintenance-free description is not enough to approve an enclosed cupboard.

Request an accessible, labelled isolation plan covering the battery, alternator feed, solar and shore power. HSE electrical-work guidance calls for isolation and release of all energy sources. Ask the installer to identify what remains energised after each switch is operated, and document the safe shutdown sequence. Include verification of isolation before work and the inverter’s earthing and changeover arrangements where fitted.

Make acceptance checks part of the order

Put the approved models, settings, wiring requirements, manuals and acceptance checks into the purchase specification. Require approval before substitutions. Request model-matched test evidence and use our test-report verification guide. Agree factory checks of identity, capacity under stated test conditions, charging behaviour and protection functions. Arrange transport separately using our battery shipping guide.

Before use, have the installer commission the finished system: check polarity, connections, fusing, charge settings, loaded voltage drop, temperature behaviour and operation with charging sources together. Agree safe methods for checking shutdown and recovery without deliberately creating a dangerous fault. Keep the wiring drawing, settings and handover record. Cambridge China Bridge’s own staff in China can check goods against the agreed brief; arrange campervan commissioning with your installer.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace my campervan lead-acid battery with lithium?

Have an installer review every charger, the alternator connection, battery protection and wiring first. Agree the necessary changes before ordering; matching nominal voltage does not establish compatibility.

Can I keep my existing leisure battery charger?

Only after its charging profile, current limit and temperature controls have been checked against the exact replacement battery. Include the solar controller and alternator charging equipment in the review.

What size fuse and cable does my leisure battery need?

Ask the installer to calculate them together from current demand, cable route, voltage drop and installation conditions. Check fuse fault-breaking capability too. Battery capacity alone cannot determine the answer.

Does a battery isolator switch disconnect everything?

It may leave solar, alternator or shore-power circuits energised. Request a labelled isolation drawing and shutdown procedure showing how each source is isolated and how the installer verifies isolation.
