Sourcing water leak alarms from China

Decide where the warning must sound: on the detector or on a separate hub. Require a shallow-water test and separate checks for hub failure and lost internet. Aqara advertises detection at 0.5 mm, but that is a model-specific claim, not a universal acceptance limit. Agree the complete sensor, hub and alert configuration before comparing quotes.

Buy the warning path, not just the sensor

Write the required outcome into the order: an audible warning beside the leak, a warning at a hub, a phone notification, or valve operation. Ask the supplier to identify which supplied device performs each function. For a warning-only purchase, exclude automatic shut-off from the promised features unless the valve and its controller are expressly included.

Aqara's Water Leak Sensor E1 manual says that a compatible hub is required and that some features require a specific hub. Its Water Leak Sensor product page advertises detection at 0.5 mm. These are useful questions for sample comparison, not specifications that every Chinese leak alarm meets. Require the exact model's manual and demonstrate the complete configuration you intend to sell.

Put the sensor, probe arrangement, hub, battery, application and firmware identifiers in the product specification. For kits that use a plug to control another device, the smart plug sourcing guide covers that separate product.

Where to look: a Shenzhen factory lead and a Shanghai fair

Shenzhen's Longgang district provides a documented manufacturer lead: Shenzhen Meian Technology lists its SW02 smart water-immersion sensor and gives its factory address as 27 Lanshui Road, Baolong Subdistrict, Longgang District. The same page separately identifies its research and marketing address. Use that distinction when arranging a visit: request access to the assembly and functional-test operation, rather than assuming the sales office is the factory.

For comparing connected-home systems, consider Shanghai Smart Home Technology. The organiser lists smart home systems and smart hardware among its exhibits. The organiser's Chinese event agenda names it 上海国际智能家居展览会. Ask prospective exhibitors to bring a working leak sensor and its required hub; a general smart-home catalogue is insufficient for your acceptance decision. For gas detection products, see our combustible gas alarm sourcing guide.

These are a manufacturer lead and a relevant sourcing fair, not evidence that either location specialises exclusively in leak alarms. Confirm the next fair arrangements with the organiser before booking travel.

An acceptance test that exposes missed leaks

Use the following as a proposed purchasing test plan. Agree the water depth, water type, response limit, installation surface and reset behaviour with the supplier before testing. Do not invent a response-time promise from a demonstration video.

Shallow water: place the detector as it will be installed and introduce a measured shallow layer that reaches the contacts. Record detection separately from the audible warning and phone notification. If the supplier promises 0.5 mm detection, test that promise; otherwise use the agreed model-specific depth. Fully soaking a probe should not substitute for this test.

Coverage and battery: test at the intended mounting position, including under or beside the relevant appliance. Aqara's troubleshooting guidance identifies distance from the hub, depleted batteries and interference from a metal mounting surface as possible connection problems. Include the supplier's low-battery test procedure and check that an offline device is visible to the user.

Loss of service: disconnect the internet while leaving the hub powered, then test hub power loss separately. Record which warnings remain available in each condition. Reject a configuration that fails the offline behaviour promised in your specification.

Repeat use and construction: wet, dry and reactivate the sample; inspect contact alignment, battery-compartment seals and any supplied probe cable. Require the factory to record results against the finished product's identifier. These are recommended acceptance checks, rather than claims that a particular defect occurs in every model.

UK rules and standards: match the actual configuration

For sale in Great Britain, wireless alarms fall within the Radio Equipment Regulations 2017. Check the manufacturer's conformity assessment, technical documentation, Declaration of Conformity and appropriate marking. The government guidance permits CE or UKCA marking under the applicable conformity route. Check UK importer identification and accompanying English instructions and safety information. Use the separate Northern Ireland guidance if that is your destination.

For a non-radio electronic alarm, assess the Electromagnetic Compatibility Regulations 2016 against its design and applicable exclusions. Also review the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2012: in-scope equipment needs supporting technical documentation, a declaration and the required marking. Commercial importers of electrical equipment are producers for WEEE purposes and must register annually.

For a consumer connected alarm within the PSTI regime, the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure Act 2022 and its 2023 security regulations add obligations beyond radio conformity. Obtain the accompanying statement of compliance, check the ban on universal default and easily guessable passwords, and obtain published security-reporting information and the minimum security-update period. Assess scope rather than assuming that connection through a hub removes these duties.

Separate water detection from enclosure protection. IEC 60529 classifies enclosure protection through the IP code; request evidence for the claimed rating on the supplied enclosure. An enclosure-protection report should not replace the shallow-water detection test.

For a concrete standards reference, LEDVANCE's AC65816 smart wireless water detector declaration lists ETSI EN 300 328 V2.2.2, ETSI EN 301 489-1 V2.2.3, ETSI EN 301 489-17 V3.2.4 and EN IEC 63000:2018. This is an EU declaration for that product, not UK legislation or approval of your supplier's model. Ask the laboratory to confirm the standards and editions appropriate to your radio, electronics and chosen conformity route.

Use testing and certification support to review the model-specific evidence. Put changes to the radio module, enclosure and firmware through document review before a repeat order; see firmware changes on connected products.

Duty: classify the finished alarm by function

The table is a conditional classification candidate for a complete electric sound or visual signalling alarm, not a ruling for every water sensor. The tariff describes 8531807000 as other apparatus under heading 8531. A sensor-only device, a hub or a valve assembly needs its own assessment; do not assign this code merely because the catalogue says 'water leak detector'. For the reverse trade, see UK alarm system exports to China.

Read the circuit description and outputs with your broker and use the commodity-code guide. The UK Trade Tariff page was checked on 10 October 2026 with the China filter. It showed third-country duty of 0% and standard VAT of 20%. Check any applicable China anti-dumping measures and recheck the measures for the declaration date.

Worked import example: include delivery in the VAT base

Hypothetical values only, not a supplier quotation: goods cost £10,000; freight and insurance to the UK border cost £500. Assume an agreed customs value of £10,500, confirmed classification under 8531807000, and no other customs-value adjustments. Duty is £10,500 × 0% = £0.

Assume a further £200 of delivery and incidental costs to the first UK destination, not already included in the customs value, and no other VAT-base additions. The import VAT base is £10,500 + £0 + £200 = £10,700. Import VAT at 20% is £2,140. Duty plus import VAT is therefore £2,140; goods, the stated logistics costs and import taxes total £12,840 before any VAT recovery.

HMRC requires relevant incidental costs to the first UK destination, and a further destination known at importation, to be included in the VAT value together with customs duty. Keep the freight breakdown so costs are neither omitted nor counted twice. The UK import duty and VAT guide explains the wider calculation.

Frequently asked questions

Should every leak alarm detect water at 0.5 mm?

No. That is a published Aqara product claim. Specify and test the threshold promised for your exact model and installation surface.

Can I approve a sample using only a phone notification?

Use separate tests for detection, the promised audible warning and the phone notification. Then test internet loss and hub power loss against the agreed behaviour.

Does an IP report prove that the alarm detects leaks?

It supports the claimed enclosure protection. Require a separate functional test for detection and the complete warning path.

Can I use 8531807000 for every item in a leak-prevention kit?

No. The table is conditional on classification as other electric signalling apparatus. Ask your broker to assess separately supplied sensors, hubs and valve assemblies by their functions.
