Sourcing combustible gas alarms from China
Relevant heading 8531 lines carry 0% to 2% UK duty from China, depending on classification and whether complete alarms or parts are imported. Check applicable electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility and hazardous-substance rules before sale in Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources combustible gas alarms.

UK duty on combustible gas alarms
Heading 8531 covers electric sound or visual signalling apparatus, including alarms, excluding apparatus of headings 8512 and 8530. The table shows possible lines for combustible gas alarms, related signalling equipment, separate sounders and parts. These are classification options for different goods, rather than interchangeable codes for a complete alarm. For wider heading coverage, see our carbon monoxide alarm guide.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, building alarms and similar apparatus under 8531 10 30 00, other similar alarms under 8531 10 95 90 and separate buzzers under 8531 80 40 90 carried 2% duty from China. Other signalling apparatus under 8531 80 70 00 and parts under 8531 90 00 00 carried 0%. The supplied snapshot records no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls.
Ask your customs broker to confirm the commodity code using the target gas, operating description, installation type, datasheet and component list. Explain whether the shipment contains complete alarms, a system or separately supplied components. A parts code does not establish the classification of a complete alarm.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Building gas alarms, where classified as similar alarm apparatus | 8531 10 30 00 | 2% | None |
| Other gas alarms, where classified as similar alarm apparatus | 8531 10 95 90 | 2% | None |
| Other signalling apparatus for gas alarm systems, where applicable | 8531 80 70 00 | 0% | None |
| Separately imported gas alarm buzzers and similar sounders | 8531 80 40 90 | 2% | None |
| Parts of gas alarm signalling apparatus | 8531 90 00 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the gas, sensor and installation
Name the target gas, such as methane or propane, and the intended building or industrial application. Specify sensor technology, alarm concentration and its unit, response and recovery behaviour, warm-up indication, sensor fault warning and replacement arrangements. Agree the supply, backup power, mounting orientation, operating environment and any relay connection to a shut-off system.
Confirm with the relevant authority whether electrical safety rules apply to the alarm's supply voltage and configuration, including any exclusions. Electromagnetic compatibility rules cover equipment liable to generate electromagnetic disturbance, with exceptions. Check hazardous-substance compliance for equipment in scope. Request model-matched technical documentation, declarations and applicable CE or UKCA marking through testing and certification.
Equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres fall within the explosive-atmosphere equipment regulations, subject to their scope. For such installations, have the proposed alarm and its intended use assessed before ordering. Ask for evidence matching the actual sensor, enclosure and installation conditions; do not assume a building alarm is suitable.
For equipment within electrical safety rules, the importer must ensure that easily understandable English instructions accompany it. Hazardous-substance rules require in-scope products to show the importer's name or trademark and a contactable address on the product or packaging. Commercial importers of in-scope electrical equipment must register annually as producers under the waste electrical equipment scheme.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 63 combustible gas alarms for buildings; order, FOB value and freight are illustrative, subject to classification under 8531 10 30 00, invoiced at £1,500 free on board, with £252 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £1,752. Duty at 2% is £35.04. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £1,787.04, so it is £357.41. Import taxes total £392.45; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £35.04 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Gas response: arrange controlled testing by a competent laboratory using the agreed target gas and test conditions; compare alarm activation, recovery and repeatability with the approved specification.
Faults and power: check warm-up indication, sensor fault behaviour, low-power warning where fitted, backup operation and recovery after supply interruption. Test relay outputs with the intended interface.
Construction: compare sensor identity, circuit board and firmware with the approved sample. Check sensor openings for blockage, mounting fit, terminals, enclosure damage and supplied accessories.
Documents and labels: match model and batch identification, supply ratings, declarations, reports and instructions to the delivered goods. Arrange these checks using the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong
A demonstration with an unspecified gas does not establish performance for the gas your customer needs to detect. A working test button also leaves actual sensor response unverified. Agree controlled gas-response testing before bulk approval, and check that the report identifies the gas, concentration unit and tested alarm configuration.
Sensor substitutions, changed firmware or obstructed sensor openings can change alarm behaviour. A relay may operate differently from the buyer's shut-off interface. Compare production samples with the approved construction and wiring, and resolve mismatched reports before accepting shipment.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on combustible gas alarms from China?
The supplied heading 8531 lines carry 0% or 2%. Building and other similar alarms carry 2%; other signalling apparatus and parts carry 0%. Confirm the exact code. No trade remedies are recorded.
Can the same gas alarm detect methane and propane?
Ask for performance evidence for each named gas and the ordered sensor configuration. Specify alarm concentration, its unit and response conditions rather than accepting a general combustible-gas claim.
Is pressing the test button enough to inspect a gas alarm?
Include the button check, but also arrange controlled target-gas testing by a competent laboratory. Compare activation, recovery and fault behaviour with the approved specification.
Can a building gas alarm be used in an explosive atmosphere?
Do not assume suitability. Equipment intended for potentially explosive atmospheres falls within specific equipment regulations. Have the exact model and intended installation assessed before ordering.
