Sourcing carbon monoxide alarms from China

The supplied heading 8531 lines carry 0% to 2% UK duty from China; building alarms and similar apparatus carry 2%, subject to classification. Importers remain responsible for product safety after sale. Check gas-response evidence for the exact model. Cambridge China Bridge sources carbon monoxide alarms.

Duty depends on the alarm's classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 3 October 2026, heading 8531 covers electric sound or visual signalling apparatus, including alarms and parts. This guide concerns carbon monoxide alarms. The selected rows are classification candidates for complete apparatus and separately imported parts, rather than interchangeable codes for the same alarm.

The supplied China rates are 2% for building alarms and similar apparatus and for other alarms and similar apparatus, and 0% for other signalling apparatus and parts. No supplied line lists anti-dumping or countervailing duty, a suspension or an attached import control. An empty tariff control entry does not establish product safety.

Give your customs broker the intended use, detection function, power supply and datasheet to confirm the commodity code. Do not choose a parts code for a complete alarm merely to obtain a lower rate. See the smoke alarm guide for the wider heading.

Specify the sensor, battery and alarm response

Specify the sensor maker and model, replaceable or sealed battery, declared working life, audible warning, display if fitted, low-battery signal and end-of-life indication. Agree the mounting arrangement and whether interconnection is needed. Keep an approved sample and require written approval before changes to the sensor, battery or firmware.

Ask a laboratory to agree gas-response tests for the intended use, then match its report to the exact model and construction. Use testing and certification to plan this work. HSE advises installing and maintaining carbon monoxide alarms according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Government guidance states that you remain responsible for product safety once it is on the market. Under hazardous-substance guidance, individual products must show the importer's name or trademark and a contactable address on the product or packaging. Check the proposed artwork before production.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 600 battery-powered carbon monoxide alarms for buildings under 8531 10 30 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 2% is £252. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,852, so it is £2,570.40. Import taxes total £2,822.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £252 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the model, sensor and battery to the approved sample and laboratory report; check for unapproved substitutions.

Response: arrange controlled gas-response checks on bulk samples through a competent laboratory, alongside the manufacturer's button-test procedure.

Warnings: check the audible warning, display, low-battery indication and end-of-life indication against the agreed specification.

Labels and packing: check importer details, batch identification, installation instructions, mounting accessories and battery isolation tabs on arrival.

What goes wrong

A sounding buzzer is not enough evidence to accept the gas-detection performance. An official product safety report identifies a carbon monoxide alarm presenting a serious asphyxiation risk because it did not sufficiently detect the gas. Obtain model-specific response evidence rather than accepting a photograph of a test button being pressed.

Look for mismatched report photographs, changed sensors, unclear replacement instructions and missing mounting accessories. If the delivered construction differs from the tested sample, hold the affected stock and arrange an assessment before accepting it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on carbon monoxide alarms from China?

The supplied building-alarm and other-alarm lines carry 2%. Other signalling apparatus and parts carry 0%. Confirm which line covers your product; no supplied line lists anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Does pressing the test button prove the sensor works?

Do not use a button demonstration as your only acceptance check. Ask for controlled gas-response evidence matching the exact model, sensor and construction.

What should I specify for the battery?

Specify replaceable or sealed construction, battery identity, declared working life, low-battery warning and end-of-life indication. Check these against the approved sample.

Must my importer details appear on the alarm?

Government hazardous-substance guidance says individual products must show the importer's name or trademark and a contactable address on the product or packaging.
