Doorbell duty depends on classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 3 October 2026, heading 8531 covers electric sound or visual signalling apparatus. The supplied door-chime line carries 2% duty from China; other signalling apparatus and parts carry 0%. Building burglar alarms carry 2%. The supplied lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls.

These rows are classification candidates for signalling products, companion alarms and parts, rather than a confirmed classification for every video doorbell. Give your customs broker the complete unit's datasheet, camera functions, communication functions and kit contents. Confirm the commodity code before ordering. For wider camera sourcing, see CCTV and security cameras.

Specify the doorbell, chime and application together

Specify wired or battery power, mounting arrangement, viewing angle, night image, microphone, speaker and indoor chime compatibility. Agree the application, account ownership, local recording option, cloud subscription terms and behaviour after an internet outage. Test the sample at a doorway with backlighting and through the intended wall construction.

Wireless models must meet radio equipment essential requirements before sale in Great Britain. Consumer models that connect to the internet or a network are within the connected-product security rules. Passwords must be unique per product or user-defined. Ask for the model's conformity documents, security documentation and update policy for review through testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 600 video doorbell units, assuming classification in this line is confirmed under 8531 80 40 90, invoiced at £20,000 free on board, with £1,100 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £21,100. Duty at 2% is £422. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £21,522, so it is £4,304.40. Import taxes total £4,726.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £422 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Visitor call: check button operation, indoor chime, phone notification and conversation with the phone screen locked.

Image and sound: check backlit faces, night images, microphone clarity, speaker distortion and recording playback.

Power and enclosure: check charging, wired supply compatibility, mounting screws, gasket fit and the agreed weather-resistance test results.

Application and records: check pairing, account reset, password setup and that model identifiers match the supplied conformity documents.

What goes wrong

A sample can work on the factory network yet miss visitor notifications on the buyer's phone. Test notification permissions, a locked screen, loss of connection and reconnection. Agree whether recording and playback remain available without a paid subscription.

Substituted camera modules, batteries or seals can change image quality, charging behaviour and weather resistance. Record the approved components and application version in the purchase specification, then compare arrival samples with the approved unit. Check that removing an account allows the next user to pair the doorbell.
