Sourcing smart plugs from China
Smart plugs and separately imported components within heading 8536 carry 0% or 2% UK duty from China, depending on classification. UK domestic plug safety and wireless conformity need separate checks; connected-product passwords must be unique or user-defined. Cambridge China Bridge sources smart plugs.

Smart-plug duty depends on the complete product
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8536 covers switching, protecting and connecting apparatus for voltages not exceeding 1,000 V. The table distinguishes a candidate line for complete smart plugs from components imported separately. A component code does not establish the classification of the assembled smart plug.
The selected lines carry 0% or 2% duty from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. General plugs and sockets carry 2%. Suspensions on the general connector and relay lines cover specified products, not an automatic exemption for smart plugs. The tariff attaches mercury import controls to the switch and relay lines; the reference guide explains the prohibition on listed mercury-added products. Ask the factory for a written mercury-free confirmation.
Confirm the commodity code using the complete product specification, circuit function and construction before ordering. The wider heading guide covers breakers, switches and connectors. The worked order is illustrative and assumes the stated classification.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other plugs and sockets: candidate line for complete smart plugs | 8536 69 90 99 | 2% | None |
| Other mains-voltage switches, imported separately | 8536 50 80 00 | 0% | None |
| Other relays over 60 V, imported separately | 8536 49 00 99 | 2% | None |
| Printed-circuit plugs and sockets, imported separately | 8536 69 30 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the plug, load and connected functions
Specify plug and socket geometry, fuse, rated load, permitted appliance types, relay, enclosure material and manual override. Record whether scheduling and energy monitoring work locally or depend on a cloud service. Name the application, supported phones, account ownership, reset procedure and behaviour after power or network loss. Keep an approved sample and agree how hardware and firmware changes will be authorised.
Confirm the applicable UK domestic plug and socket safety requirements with the relevant authority, including whether the exact plug type needs approval and which plug and fuse standards apply. For wireless models sold in Great Britain, radio equipment must meet the essential requirements; request conformity documentation and reports matching the assembled model, not just its radio module.
For consumer connectable products within the security regime, passwords must be unique per product or user-defined. Ask for the security statement of compliance, vulnerability-reporting contact and declared update-support period. Check hazardous-substance evidence against the supplied materials, as covered in the reference guide. Where your business is an electrical equipment producer, register annually.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 600 smart plugs, assuming classification under this code under 8536 69 90 99, invoiced at £1,500 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,100. Duty at 2% is £42. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,142, so it is £428.40. Import taxes total £470.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £42 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Construction: compare pins, shutters, fuse, socket grip, enclosure and internal components with the approved sample. Check that neighbouring sockets remain usable.
Electrical performance: have competent testers check earth continuity, insulation, switching and temperature rise against the agreed test plan and declared load.
Connected functions: pair samples using the buyer's network and phone, exercise schedules and manual override, interrupt power and internet access, then check recovery and account reset.
Documents and arrival: match model identifiers and ratings to approvals and reports. Inspect received cartons for damage, cracked housings and bent pins, and keep batch records.

What goes wrong
Check for substituted relays, weak socket contacts, damaged shutters and housings that obstruct adjacent outlets. A radio-module report alone does not demonstrate how the assembled plug performs under load. Keep the agreed component list and sample available during inspection.
A plug can switch correctly but fail the buyer's intended use when schedules stop without internet access, an account cannot be transferred or the cloud service changes. Test these conditions before accepting bulk production, and agree responsibility for application support and firmware updates.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on smart plugs from China?
The selected heading 8536 lines carry 0% or 2%. General plugs and sockets under 8536 69 90 99 carry 2%, with no listed trade remedy. Confirm the complete smart plug's classification.
Is a wireless module certificate enough for a smart plug?
Request evidence matching the assembled model and its load rating. Radio equipment sold in Great Britain must conform with the essential requirements.
What password rules apply to connected smart plugs?
For consumer connectable products within the security regime, passwords must be unique per product or capable of being defined by the user.
What should I test before accepting smart plugs?
Check plug construction, switching under the declared load, temperature rise, pairing, schedules, manual override and recovery after power or network loss.
