Sourcing wall dimmer switches from China
The selected switch lines carry 0% UK duty from China; ordinary mains wall switches fall under 8536 50 80 00. Confirm the applicable electrical safety requirements for mains dimmers with the relevant authority before sale in Great Britain. Check the exact model's documents and its performance with your lamps. Cambridge China Bridge sources wall dimmer switches.

Wall dimmer switch duty and classification
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the selected switch lines under heading 8536 carried 0% duty from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no tariff suspension. The heading covers switching and connecting apparatus for voltages not exceeding 1,000 V.
The table distinguishes mains wall switches from low-voltage rotary, push-button and other switches used in dimming controls. These are classification options, not interchangeable codes for a finished dimmer. Confirm the commodity code from the complete product's function, circuit and voltage. See the wider heading guide for other electrical apparatus.
The selected lines attach mercury import and export controls. The import prohibition concerns listed mercury-added products, rather than every switch. Ask for written confirmation that the dimmer contains no mercury; if it does, confirm the applicable restriction with your customs broker before ordering. Import VAT is normally 20%; see import duty and VAT.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other switches over 60 V, including mains wall switches | 8536 50 80 00 | 0% | None |
| Rotary switches up to 60 V | 8536 50 15 00 | 0% | None |
| Push-button switches up to 60 V | 8536 50 11 00 | 0% | None |
| Other switches up to 60 V | 8536 50 19 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the dimming circuit and lamp compatibility
Specify leading-edge or trailing-edge dimming, compatible lamp and driver models, minimum and maximum connected load, neutral-wire needs, switching arrangements and behaviour after a power interruption. Define faceplate finish, knob action, terminal layout, mounting centres and back-box depth. Approve samples with the lamps you intend to supply or use.
For mains dimmers sold in Great Britain, confirm with the relevant authority which electrical safety requirements apply, including technical documentation, declaration of conformity, UKCA or CE marking, and importer identification. Also confirm whether hazardous-substance restrictions apply. Electronic equipment liable to generate electromagnetic disturbance falls within the Electromagnetic Compatibility Regulations 2016, subject to exceptions. Request model-matched evidence through testing and certification.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 600 mains wall dimmer switches; illustrative order, not a quotation under 8536 50 80 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,600, so it is £2,520. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Dimming: test the agreed lamps across the adjustment range for flicker, buzzing, dropout, restart and glow when switched off.
Wiring and fit: compare terminal identification, conductor clamping, faceplate alignment and back-box clearance with the approved sample and drawing.
Heat and construction: have a suitably equipped laboratory check operation at the agreed loads; compare the circuit board, components and insulating parts with the approved design.
Documents and finish: match model and rating markings to the declaration and reports; check importer identification, knob retention, scratches and packing. Use quality inspection to plan the checks.

What goes wrong
A dimmer that works with the factory's demonstration lamp can flicker or fail to start with your chosen driver. A missing neutral connection, unsuitable dimming method or excessive minimum load can make an otherwise working sample unusable in the intended installation.
Bulk substitutions can change heat, noise and dimming behaviour. A deeper module may also prevent the faceplate seating in the agreed back box. Freeze the approved circuit and component list, and compare bulk samples with the retained sample before accepting the shipment.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on wall dimmer switches from China?
The selected switch lines carry 0% duty, including 8536 50 80 00 for other mains-voltage switches. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is recorded on these lines.
Do wall dimmer switches need CE or UKCA marking?
Confirm with the relevant authority whether the mains dimmer needs UKCA or CE marking for Great Britain, and which technical documentation and declaration of conformity are required.
Will a Chinese wall dimmer work with my lamps?
Approve it with the exact lamp and driver models. Check the dimming method, connected-load range, neutral requirement, flicker, noise and restart behaviour.
Can I use the factory's test report for a different dimmer model?
Ask for evidence covering the supplied model, circuit and ratings. Compare the report's product identification with the approved sample and bulk goods.
