Duty on vehicle mobile video recorders

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8521 covers video recording or reproducing apparatus, whether or not incorporating a video tuner. Non-tape vehicle mobile video recorders fall within the description of 8521 90 00 00. The table shows product variants sharing that tariff line.

The supplied tariff facts show 0% duty on goods from China across this heading, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or import controls. Import VAT is separate from duty.

Confirm the commodity code against the recorder's actual function and the contents of the shipment, especially where cameras are supplied with it. For the wider recorder category, see coaxial CCTV DVRs.

Specify ignition power, storage and footage export

Specify the vehicle supply range, ignition trigger, shutdown behaviour, camera inputs, recording settings and storage medium. Agree what happens when storage fills, power is interrupted or a drive is removed. Request sample footage exported from the proposed recorder and opened on your own computer. Identify any proprietary player, subscription or cloud account needed to retrieve recordings.

Great Britain's electromagnetic compatibility rules cover electrical and electronic equipment liable to generate electromagnetic disturbance, subject to exceptions. For wireless models, the importer must ensure the manufacturer has carried out the relevant conformity assessment before placing them on that market. Ask a testing and certification adviser to review the intended installation and exact finished model.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 50 vehicle mobile video recorders; illustrative order under 8521 90 00 00, invoiced at £14,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £14,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £14,600, so it is £2,920. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Power: check cold starts, ignition switching and footage recovery after an interrupted supply using the agreed vehicle power conditions.

Storage: check the fitted drive against the approved specification, loop recording, event protection and playback after removing and refitting the storage.

Connections: check camera compatibility, locking connectors, cable identification and mounting security against the approved sample.

Footage: check simultaneous camera recordings, timestamps, exported files and wireless reconnection on arrival. Use the agreed checks in your inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A recorder demonstrated on a bench supply can restart during vehicle starting or lose the last recording when ignition power disappears. Loose connectors and unsuitable storage can produce intermittent gaps that are missed during a brief demonstration. Test the complete harness, cameras and storage together.

Another failure is footage that plays inside the factory's software but cannot be exported conveniently by the fleet operator. Agree the export workflow and freeze the approved firmware, storage and connector specification before production. Recheck these against the delivered batch.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.
