UK duty on DVD recorders

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8521 covers video recording or reproducing apparatus, whether or not incorporating a video tuner. DVD recorders fall within the other apparatus line, 8521 90 00 00. The magnetic tape line is outside this guide's product scope, so the table contains only the relevant commodity line.

The supplied tariff facts show 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control listed for this line. Import VAT is normally 20%. Zero customs duty does not replace the product compliance checks needed before sale.

Confirm the commodity code using the recorder's recording method, tuner and storage functions. For playback-only equipment and the wider heading, see DVD players from China.

Specify recording inputs and disc compatibility

State whether the recorder captures from an external video source, a television tuner or its internal storage. List the actual recording inputs separately from playback outputs. Agree supported blank disc formats, rewritable-disc operation, recording modes, disc finalisation and playback compatibility. If a tuner is included, test reception with the service your customers intend to use.

For mains-powered equipment, confirm with the relevant product safety authority which requirements apply to technical documentation, a declaration of conformity, UKCA or CE marking and importer identification. The importer must also ensure easily understandable English instructions accompany the equipment. Match the documents to the supplied model, power supply and construction. Arrange testing and certification before approving production.

Ordinary DVD recorders also fall within hazardous-substance rules and electromagnetic compatibility requirements. Ask for supporting material information and electromagnetic compatibility reports for the finished model. Electrical equipment producers must register annually for their electrical waste obligations; plan these alongside the recorder specification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 500 DVD recorders, illustrative order under 8521 90 00 00, invoiced at £14,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £15,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £15,200, so it is £3,040. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Recording: record from every agreed input onto each approved blank disc format, stop the recording and play it back with sound.

Finalisation: finalise a recorded disc, eject it and play it on a separate player. Test rewriting and erasing where specified.

Hardware: check tray movement, disc recognition, remote control operation, timer recording and recovery after a power interruption. Compare the drive and power supply with the approved sample.

Documents and packing: match model labels and compliance documents, check importer identification and English instructions, and confirm the agreed UK plug and accessories. Repeat functional checks after arrival; use the inspection guide to prepare the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A recorder can play a factory demonstration disc yet fail to write the buyer's blank media. Finalisation faults can leave recordings readable only on the original machine. Require an acceptance test that records, finalises and plays the resulting disc on another player, using the media you intend to supply.

An advertised connection may be an output rather than a recording input. Replacement optical drives or firmware can change disc compatibility after sample approval. Name the approved drive and firmware in the specification, agree how changes are approved, and keep a recorded sample disc for comparison.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on DVD recorders from China?

The supplied tariff facts, read on 30 September 2026, show 0% duty under 8521 90 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty listed. Import VAT is normally 20%.

What paperwork should I request for a mains-powered DVD recorder?

Request technical documentation, a declaration of conformity and reports matching the supplied model. Check UKCA or CE marking, importer identification and English instructions.

How do I check that recorded discs will work on other players?

Record onto each agreed blank disc format, finalise the disc and play it on a separate player. Check both picture and sound, rather than relying on playback within the recorder.

Can a DVD recorder record through every connection?

Check the specification and test each intended recording input. A playback output does not establish recording capability. Agree the source equipment and cables before approving the sample.
