Sourcing coaxial CCTV DVRs from China

Coaxial CCTV DVRs from China carry 0% UK duty under 8521 90 00 00, with no listed trade remedies. Relevant consumer-connectable models must meet product security rules; confirm the password and published security support information requirements with the relevant authority. Specify actual recording performance. Cambridge China Bridge sources coaxial CCTV DVRs.

Duty on coaxial CCTV recorders

Heading 8521 covers video recording or reproducing apparatus, whether or not incorporating a video tuner. Coaxial CCTV DVRs record camera signals received over coaxial cable onto digital storage. The configurations in the table share the same non-tape commodity line; they are not separate tariff subheadings.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the relevant line 8521 90 00 00 carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff data lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control for that line. Import VAT is normally 20%.

Confirm the commodity code using the recorder's functions and the goods actually supplied, especially where cameras or accessories form a kit. For the wider recorder family, see network video recorders.

Specify coaxial inputs and recorded performance

Name the camera signal formats and models the recorder must accept. Specify simultaneous recording resolution and frame rate across all active inputs, rather than the maximum live-view resolution. Agree playback, audio recording, motion detection, monitor outputs and exported footage compatibility.

State whether the hard drive is included, its agreed model and capacity, supported replacement drives, overwrite behaviour and disk-failure warnings. Test the intended cameras and cable runs with an approved sample. For hybrid recorders, agree how adding network cameras changes the available coaxial inputs or recording performance.

In Great Britain, electromagnetic compatibility rules cover electrical and electronic equipment liable to generate electromagnetic disturbance, subject to exceptions. Ask for model-specific conformity documents and reports. For a mains adaptor, confirm the electrical safety voltage scope and the technical-documentation, declaration of conformity, CE or UKCA marking and importer-identification requirements with the relevant authority. Obtain testing and certification support for the actual recorder and adaptor.

Product security rules apply to relevant consumer products that connect to the internet or a network. For models in scope, confirm the requirements for unique or user-set passwords, a published security reporting contact and a published minimum security update period with the relevant authority. Agree who supports firmware and remote viewing. Check electrical-waste producer obligations; producers must register annually.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 500 coaxial CCTV digital video recorders under 8521 90 00 00, invoiced at £14,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £15,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £15,200, so it is £3,040. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Inputs: connect the agreed camera models, populate the intended inputs and compare recorded footage with the approved sample.

Storage: confirm the fitted drive, test recording and playback, check overwrite behaviour and trigger the disk-failure warning.

Recovery: interrupt and restore power, then check automatic recording recovery, clock settings and footage export on a separate computer.

Identity and support: match recorder and adaptor labels to the documents, test password setup and remote viewing, and check the published support information. Hazardous-substance rules require importer identification and a contactable address on the product or packaging.

What goes wrong

A recorder can display a camera image while recording at a lower resolution or frame rate than the buyer expects. Mixed camera formats, reduced performance with all inputs active and exports requiring an unavailable player can make footage unsuitable. Put recorded output and usable export files into the acceptance specification.

An unapproved drive or adaptor substitution can cause recording gaps, restarts or overheating. Firmware changes can alter camera compatibility or remote access. Compare production units with the approved sample and agree written approval for substitutions. Use quality inspection to check recording behaviour before shipment and repeat the functional checks on arrival.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on coaxial CCTV DVRs from China?

The supplied tariff data shows 0% duty under 8521 90 00 00, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is normally 20%.

Will a coaxial DVR work with my existing cameras?

Match the camera signal format, resolution and model to the recorder's supported inputs. Test your cameras and intended cable runs on a sample, including simultaneous recording and playback.

Does a CCTV DVR include a hard drive?

Agree this explicitly. Specify the supplied drive model and capacity, supported replacements, overwrite behaviour and disk-failure warnings. A diskless recorder needs a compatible drive before recording.

Do coaxial CCTV DVRs need product security checks?

Relevant consumer-connectable models do. Check unique or user-set passwords, the published security reporting contact and minimum security update period. Coaxial camera inputs do not tell you whether the recorder connects to a network.
