USB webcam classification and duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8525 covers transmission apparatus and television, digital and video cameras. Ordinary USB webcams belong in the other-camera category, subject to confirmation against the actual specification. The webcam variants in the table share 8525 89 00 00; they are not separate tariff subheadings.

All supplied lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff data records no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls. Zero duty does not remove product compliance responsibilities. Import VAT is normally 20%; see UK import duty and VAT.

Confirm the commodity code using the sensor, intended function and technical specification. Do not classify a webcam as specialist night vision merely because it has infrared illumination. For the wider camera family, see industrial machine vision cameras. For professional recording equipment, see our professional camcorder sourcing guide. For wildlife monitoring cameras, see our trail camera sourcing guide.

Specify the image, microphone and connection

Specify native sensor resolution separately from software interpolation, and agree the frame rate at each advertised resolution. Name the sensor and lens, focus method, field of view, supported operating systems and conferencing applications. Keep an approved sample and its original recordings for comparison.

Agree the connector, cable length, microphone behaviour, status light and privacy shutter. Test the sample directly on the intended computers and through the hubs buyers will use. Record whether software installation is needed and whether settings survive unplugging.

For Great Britain, electromagnetic compatibility rules require the manufacturer to supply relevant English instructions. Under hazardous-substance rules, individual products must show the importer's name or trademark and a contactable address on the product or packaging. Electrical-equipment producers must register annually. Arrange the applicable registration route before selling, and ask for model-specific compliance documents through testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 500 USB webcams under 8525 89 00 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,600, so it is £2,520. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Image: compare production recordings with the approved sample under the same lighting. Check focus, colour, exposure changes and frame continuity at the agreed settings.

Audio and connection: record speech, listen for hiss and distortion, and check recognition after unplugging and reconnecting. Flex the cable gently while watching for disconnections.

Mount and shutter: check that the clip grips the intended screens, the hinge holds its position and the shutter fully blocks the lens.

Documents and packing: match model identifiers to the supplied reports and instructions, check importer details, and inspect lens protection and cable packing. Use a written inspection checklist.

What goes wrong

An advertised resolution may rely on interpolation, while the advertised frame rate may apply only at a lower resolution. Ask the factory to demonstrate the exact combination in the intended application. Compare recordings rather than accepting a screenshot of a settings menu.

A changed sensor, lens or microphone can alter performance without changing the casing. Put component approval and change notification into the purchase specification. If production samples show unstable focus, noisy audio or repeated disconnections, resolve the fault before accepting the batch.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.
