Sourcing underwater digital cameras from China

Underwater digital cameras from China carry 0% UK duty under heading 8525, with no listed trade remedies. Wireless models must meet radio equipment requirements before sale in Great Britain. Specify the complete camera and housing, then verify the claimed immersion performance. Cambridge China Bridge sources underwater digital cameras.

Camera duty and classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8525 covers transmission apparatus, television cameras, digital cameras and video camera recorders. Ordinary underwater digital cameras fall within the other-camera line, subject to confirmation of their actual features. The specialist rows are classification comparisons, not alternative codes to choose simply because a camera is used underwater.

All supplied lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff data lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls. Import VAT is normally 20%. An empty tariff control list does not establish that a product is ready for sale.

Confirm the commodity code using the camera's sensor, recording functions and technical specification. See action cameras for the wider camera family and import duty and VAT for the calculation method.

Specify the camera and its immersion conditions

State whether the camera is waterproof by itself or depends on a separate housing. Agree the claimed depth, immersion duration, fresh or salt water use, operating temperature and whether controls may be operated underwater. Identify the housing, lens port, seals, battery door and connector covers in the approved specification.

Specify the sensor, lens, genuine captured resolution, underwater colour behaviour, autofocus, stabilisation and recording format. Agree a repeatable immersion test followed by image capture and inspection for moisture. Include instructions for seal cleaning, closing the housing and rinsing after salt water use.

Wireless models must conform with the essential radio equipment requirements before being placed on the Great Britain market. Ask for radio test reports for the exact camera model. Electrical and electronic equipment is also within the hazardous-substance restrictions unless specifically excluded; request supporting material evidence through testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 500 underwater digital cameras under 8525 89 00 00, invoiced at £36,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £37,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £37,200, so it is £7,440. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Seals: inspect sealing surfaces for grit, cuts and distortion; check door latches, housing joints and connector covers against the approved sample.

Immersion: test production samples under the agreed conditions, exercise permitted controls and inspect the battery compartment and lens port for moisture afterwards.

Images: compare submerged photographs and recordings with the approved sample; check focus, colour, condensation, recording continuity and file playback.

Arrival: check housings for transit cracks, accessories against the packing list and batteries for visible damage. Repeat the agreed functional checks before releasing stock; use the inspection guide to plan sampling.

What goes wrong

A splash-resistant camera or a camera supplied with an untested housing may be presented as suitable for diving. A headline depth claim is incomplete without the immersion conditions and the exact housing configuration. Do not approve packaging claims from a supplier's catalogue alone.

A changed seal, latch or lens port can invalidate the approved sample's performance. Sensor substitutions can also change image quality without changing the outer casing. Record approved components and require proposed changes to be reviewed before production.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on underwater cameras from China?

The supplied heading 8525 lines carry 0% duty, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing measures. Ordinary underwater digital cameras usually use 8525 89 00 00, subject to classification checks.

Is a waterproof camera suitable for diving?

Ask for the claimed depth, immersion duration and permitted operating conditions. Check whether the claim applies to the camera alone or only with the specified housing, then test that configuration.

What paperwork should I request for a wireless underwater camera?

Request radio test reports for the exact model and evidence of conformity with the applicable radio equipment requirements. Also request supporting evidence for hazardous-substance restrictions.

How should I check underwater camera samples?

Agree an immersion test, inspect seals and latches, then compare submerged images with the approved sample. Check for moisture, condensation, focus problems and interrupted recordings.
