Zero duty on wildlife trail cameras

Heading 8525 includes television cameras, digital cameras and video camera recorders. Ordinary wildlife trail cameras belong in the general camera category, subject to confirmation of their technical features. The table shows different ordinary trail-camera configurations sharing the same tariff line.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, all supplied lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied data lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls. This tariff position does not replace product compliance checks before sale.

Infrared illumination alone does not make an ordinary camera a specialist tariff night vision product. Confirm the sensor and recording functions through the commodity code guide. For the wider product family, see CCTV and security cameras. For document presentation equipment, see our document camera sourcing guide.

Specify the trigger, night image and connection

Name the sensor, lens, infrared illuminator and firmware in the specification. Agree how to test motion detection, the delay before recording, missed animals, moving subjects at night and false triggers from vegetation. Specify memory-card compatibility, overwrite behaviour, battery type, external power connection, mounting strap and enclosure seals.

For internet-connected cameras, confirm with the relevant authority whether passwords must be unique per product or set by the user, and what requirements apply to the manufacturer's published security reporting contact and minimum security update period. Agree who maintains the app and firmware, and test image uploads using the intended UK mobile network before approving the sample.

For radio-equipped models sold in Great Britain, the importer must check conformity assessment, technical documentation, the declaration of conformity and relevant marking. Importers must also be able to evidence compliance with restrictions on hazardous substances. Ask for documents covering the finished camera. Confirm with the relevant authority which waste electrical equipment obligations apply; include these in the testing and certification brief.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 500 wildlife trail cameras under 8525 89 00 00, invoiced at £14,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £15,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £15,200, so it is £3,040. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Capture: compare day and infrared recordings with the approved sample, including moving subjects and the start of each recording.

Trigger and storage: test detection from different directions, false triggers, memory-card recording, playback and overwrite behaviour.

Enclosure and power: check battery contacts, door latches, seals, external power covers and straps; repeat the agreed water exposure test.

Connected functions: check pairing, image delivery, recovery after lost signal and the password setup against the approved specification. Record results during quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A camera can record a clear stationary scene yet miss an animal crossing its detection area. Trigger delay, exposure and infrared illumination need testing together. A changed sensor, lens or firmware can alter results even when the housing looks identical.

Poorly seated seals can admit water into the battery compartment. Connected models can also fail when an app account, mobile network or remote service differs from the sample setup. Keep an approved configuration and repeat the same checks on delivered stock.
