Sourcing industrial vision cameras from China
Industrial machine vision cameras from China carry 0% UK duty across the ordinary and specialist camera lines shown here, with no trade remedies recorded. Electrical equipment must meet applicable electromagnetic compatibility requirements before sale in Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources industrial machine vision cameras.

Zero duty on industrial camera lines
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, heading 8525 covers transmission apparatus and television, digital and video cameras. This guide concerns industrial machine vision cameras used to capture images for production inspection, measurement and positioning.
The camera lines shown all carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls. The specialist rows are alternatives only when the camera meets the relevant tariff note; a factory's description of a camera as high-speed or night vision is not enough.
Confirm the commodity code against the sensor, imaging function and technical specifications. For the wider camera family, see CCTV and security cameras. Import VAT is separate from duty; see UK import duty and VAT.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other cameras, including ordinary industrial machine vision cameras | 8525 89 00 00 | 0% | None |
| High-speed cameras meeting the tariff subheading note | 8525 81 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Radiation-hardened or radiation-tolerant cameras meeting the tariff note | 8525 82 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Night vision cameras meeting the tariff subheading note | 8525 83 00 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the image and the production interface
Name the sensor and lens mount, monochrome or colour output, shutter type, resolution and image rate at the required exposure. Define the field of view, working distance, smallest defect to detect and lighting arrangement. Give the factory representative parts with acceptable and unacceptable features, and retain the approved images.
Specify the data interface, connector pinout, trigger input, exposure timing, power arrangement and cable retention. Test the camera with your actual computer, operating system, acquisition software and production cable. Agree driver access, software licensing, firmware version and how replacement cameras will retain the same settings.
Electrical equipment liable to generate electromagnetic disturbance falls within the electromagnetic compatibility rules, subject to exceptions. Ask for model-specific conformity documents and test reports. Hazardous-substance restrictions cover electrical and electronic equipment unless specifically excluded. For products in scope, importer identification and a contactable address must appear on the product or packaging. Arrange testing and certification around the actual configuration.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 500 industrial machine vision cameras; illustrative order, values are not a quotation under 8525 89 00 00, invoiced at £36,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £37,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £37,200, so it is £7,440. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Image capture: compare production units with the approved sample using the same target, lens, lighting and exposure; check sharpness, noise, defective pixels and colour consistency.
Triggering: run moving parts through the intended capture sequence; check missed frames, timing variation and image distortion.
Integration: verify drivers, image acquisition, connector wiring and settings retention after power cycling; test with the agreed cable and computer.
Identity and condition: match model labels, sensor identity and firmware to the order; check mounts, threads, connectors and protective packaging during inspection.
What goes wrong
An image rate demonstrated with a small capture area may not be available at the full image size and exposure your process needs. A rolling shutter can distort moving parts, while inconsistent lighting can make a sound camera appear unreliable. Approve the complete capture arrangement using the production task.
Sensor substitutions, changed connector wiring and firmware revisions can break an installation without changing the camera housing. Record the approved configuration and agree a process for approving changes. A sample that works in the supplier's demonstration software still needs testing in your own acquisition system.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on industrial machine vision cameras from China?
The ordinary and specialist camera lines in the supplied tariff record carry 0% duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duties recorded. Import VAT is separate.
Which commodity code covers a machine vision camera?
Check 8525 89 00 00 for an ordinary camera. Specialist high-speed, radiation-tolerant and night vision cameras have separate lines. Confirm the technical details against the tariff notes.
What should I send the Chinese camera factory?
Send the sensor and shutter requirements, lens mount, lighting, working distance, trigger sequence, data interface and examples of acceptable and defective parts.
How do I check compatibility before ordering?
Run an approved sample with your computer, acquisition software, cable and trigger source. Check sustained capture, power cycling, settings retention and access to drivers.
