Zero duty, with classification checked against the camera

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8525 covers transmission apparatus and television, digital and video cameras. This guide concerns broadcast studio cameras used in live production. Start with the ordinary camera description under 8525 89 00 00 and check the actual specification. Specialist rows are classification comparisons, not descriptions of ordinary studio models.

All supplied camera lines carry 0% UK duty for goods from China. The supplied record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls. A slow-motion sales description alone does not establish the tariff's high-speed category. Import VAT is normally 20%; see UK import duty and VAT.

Confirm the commodity code using the sensor, imaging functions and technical datasheet. For the wider heading and remotely controlled cameras, see PTZ conference cameras.

Specify picture matching and the studio signal chain

Specify the sensor, lens mount, native resolution, frame rates, shutter behaviour and video outputs. Agree colour processing, white balance, exposure control and the required picture match between cameras. Define external synchronisation, return video, tally indication, intercom and remote camera control where needed. State whether lenses, viewfinders, control units, cables and power supplies are included.

Test an approved sample with your vision mixer, synchronisation source, lenses and intended cable runs. Check switching between cameras, output delay, highlight handling, skin tones and noise under your studio lighting. Agree sustained operation tests after warm-up and keep the approved firmware and settings. Require approval before sensor, connector or control-protocol substitutions.

For sale in Great Britain, check the manufacturer's electromagnetic conformity assessment and retain the declaration of conformity and technical documentation. Obtain relevant English instructions and check applicable hazardous-substance requirements and importer identification. Electrical safety rules also cover workplace equipment; assess their applicability to the camera and supplied power unit. Electrical-equipment producers must register annually. Arrange model-specific testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 10 broadcast studio cameras; values are illustrative, not a quotation under 8525 89 00 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,600, so it is £2,520. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Picture: compare production cameras with the approved sample using the same lens, lighting and settings; check focus, defective pixels, colour matching and highlight detail.

Synchronisation: check external synchronisation, switching and frame continuity through the intended vision mixer; compare picture delay with the studio audio path.

Control and connections: test remote exposure and colour adjustment, tally, intercom and return video where specified; inspect connector retention, lens mounting and viewfinder operation.

Arrival and documents: inspect sensor protection, mounts, connectors and transit damage; match model identifiers to conformity documents and instructions, then repeat the agreed studio test during quality inspection.

What goes wrong

Cameras can look similar individually yet produce visibly different skin tones when switched during a programme. Automatic white balance or exposure changes can make matching harder. Compare cameras together under the intended lighting and confirm that remote adjustments provide the agreed control.

A camera may display a picture on a monitor but fail to synchronise with the studio system. Return video, tally or intercom may also depend on an optional control unit or a different cable arrangement. Approve the complete signal chain and included accessories, then repeat the test after delivery.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on broadcast studio cameras from China?

The supplied camera lines carry 0% duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls recorded. Confirm the code against the actual camera.

Which commodity code should I check for a studio camera?

Start with 8525 89 00 00 for ordinary cameras. Specialist high-speed, radiation-tolerant and night vision categories require the relevant tariff criteria; a sales description alone is insufficient.

How do I check whether the camera works with my studio?

Test with your actual vision mixer, synchronisation source, lenses and cable runs. Check switching, picture delay, remote control, tally, intercom and return video where specified.

What compliance documents should I request?

Request model-specific conformity documents, technical documentation and English instructions. Check electromagnetic compatibility, hazardous-substance requirements, importer identification and the supplied power unit.
