Professional camcorder duty and classification

Heading 8525 covers transmission apparatus, television cameras, digital cameras and video camera recorders. For a professional camcorder, distinguish ordinary recording equipment from the technically defined high-speed, night vision and radiation-resistant categories. The table includes those specialist alternatives for classification checks, rather than treating them as interchangeable models.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, all supplied lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied data lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls. Import VAT is separate from duty.

Confirm the commodity code using the sensor specification and recording functions. A professional label or a slow-motion menu does not settle the classification. For the wider camera family within this heading, see action cameras.

Specify the recording workflow

Name the sensor and lens, recording formats, frame rates, compression, storage media and editing software compatibility. Define continuous recording performance with the intended media and ambient conditions. Specify optical zoom, manual focus, exposure controls, stabilisation and whether the video output remains usable while recording.

Specify microphone inputs, headphone monitoring, audio level controls, battery mount and supplied charger. For wireless models, the importer must not place radio equipment on the Great Britain market unless it meets the essential requirements. Ask for model-specific radio reports, electromagnetic compatibility reports and conformity documentation before approving production. Confirm any waste electrical equipment obligations with the relevant authority.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 10 professional camcorders under 8525 89 00 00, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,600, so it is £2,520. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Recording: record continuously using the agreed settings and approved media, then play and import the files into the buyer's editing workflow. Check interruptions, corrupted files and heat-related shutdowns.

Lens and image: compare production footage with the approved sample under matching lighting. Check focus throughout the zoom range, exposure control, stabilisation and visible sensor defects.

Audio and connections: test external microphones, headphone monitoring and video outputs during recording. Check audio synchronisation, connector retention and operation with the supplied battery and charger.

Identity and paperwork: match model identifiers and supplied accessories to the order. Under hazardous-substance rules, individual products must show the importer's name or trademark and a contactable address on the product or packaging. Include these checks in the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A headline resolution can conceal heavily compressed footage, poor low-light performance or recording modes that stop when the camera heats up. A replacement sensor, lens or firmware can change the result after sample approval. Freeze those components and the firmware version in the order, and compare production recordings with the approved sample.

Audio faults and incompatible battery mounts can make an otherwise usable camera unsuitable for a buyer's existing kit. Test the complete workflow before shipment and repeat it on arrival. Agree how replacement accessories, firmware updates and defective units will be handled before placing the order.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on professional camcorders from China?

The supplied tariff data, read on 30 September 2026, shows 0% duty across the ordinary and specialist camera lines, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Does slow motion make a camcorder a high-speed tariff product?

Do not classify from a menu label. Compare the technical specification with the high-speed chapter note and confirm the code before shipment.

What should I test before buying professional camcorders?

Test continuous recording, file import, focus through the zoom range, external audio, video outputs and operation with your intended media and batteries.

What is the main compliance check for a wireless camcorder?

The importer must not place radio equipment on the Great Britain market unless it meets the essential requirements. Request evidence for the exact finished model.
