Duty on hand sharpening whetstones

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 6804 covers millstones, grinding wheels and related abrasives, including hand sharpening or polishing stones. Hand sharpening whetstones fall within 6804 30 00 00. The table shows product variants sharing this tariff line, rather than separate commodity codes. See the wider honing stones guide.

The supplied tariff facts record 0% duty for goods from China, no anti-dumping or countervailing measure, and no suspension. The UK Trade Tariff attaches import and export waste controls. Confirm their relevance with your customs broker, particularly for discarded stones or material sent for recovery. For notified waste imported into England, shipment can start only after consent from the Environment Agency and the other competent authorities involved.

Give your broker the material composition, construction, photographs and intended hand use to confirm the commodity code. Describe any holder or other accessories supplied with the stones. Check the duty again before shipment and use the import duty and VAT guide when preparing your landed-cost calculation.

Specify grit, bond and sharpening behaviour

Specify natural stone or synthetic abrasive, abrasive material, binder, dimensions, flatness tolerance and edge finish. For combination stones, describe each face and the joining method. Ask which grading system the supplier uses: a grit label alone does not establish comparable performance. Agree whether the stone needs soaking, surface wetting or oil, and approve instructions that match the actual product.

Approve a sample through sharpening trials on the intended blade material. Compare cutting behaviour, scratch pattern, slurry formation, wear and ease of flattening. Whetstones sold to consumers in Great Britain must be safe in normal or reasonably foreseeable use under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005. Include slipping, cracking and handling risks in your product review.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 530 synthetic hand sharpening whetstones under 6804 30 00 00, invoiced at £2,650 free on board, with £150 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,800, so it is £560. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Faces: check flatness against the agreed tolerance, dimensions, chips, cracks and any separation between bonded layers.

Performance: compare sharpening and wear with the approved sample using the same blade material, lubricant and method.

Base: check that the holder fits securely and resists sliding during wet sharpening.

Packing: check cushioning, face protection, batch identification and instructions for wetting, cleaning and storage. Include these checks in your inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A fine-labelled stone can leave coarse scratches when its abrasive grading is inconsistent. A soft bond can wear into a hollow quickly, while a hard surface may remove metal poorly. Combination stones can separate at the joint, and a slippery base makes controlled sharpening difficult.

Transit damage often appears as chipped corners or concealed cracks. Inspect unpacked stones before accepting the batch, compare performance with the approved sample and photograph failures. Agree acceptable surface defects and replacement arrangements before ordering rather than judging the shipment from grit labels alone.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on whetstones from China?

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, hand sharpening stones under 6804 30 00 00 carry 0% duty from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure recorded.

Can I compare whetstones by the grit printed on them?

Ask for the grading system and compare samples on the same blade material. The printed grit alone does not establish matching scratch patterns, cutting behaviour or wear.

Should a whetstone be soaked before use?

Agree the wetting method for the exact abrasive and binder. Ask the supplier to demonstrate it and confirm the instructions through sample trials.

What should I check when whetstones arrive?

Check flatness, chips, cracks, layer adhesion and holder grip. Compare sharpening and wear with the approved sample, and inspect the protective packing and instructions.
