UK duty on gear grinding worm wheels

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 6804 covers grinding wheels without frameworks, including bonded abrasive wheels. This guide concerns threaded abrasive wheels used to grind gear teeth. The relevant lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures and no suspensions recorded.

The tariff attaches import and export waste controls to these lines. For waste wheels imported from China into England under notification controls, the exporter must apply to the competent authority in China for consent. Ask your customs broker to confirm waste status, the applicable procedure and any requirements for returning rejected wheels to China.

The table lists material-based alternatives, rather than a dedicated worm-wheel code. Confirm the abrasive, binder and reinforcement with the factory before checking the commodity code. For the wider product family, see grinding and cutting wheels.

Specify the threaded wheel and dressing process

Give the factory the machine model and wheel drawing. Specify outside diameter, width, bore, mounting faces, thread hand, starts, pitch and profile. State whether the wheel arrives profiled or needs dressing on your machine, and identify the dressing tool and usable dressing allowance.

Agree abrasive type, grain size, bond, hardness and structure against the gear material, heat treatment and coolant. Set acceptance criteria for gear profile, lead, surface finish, grinding burn and wheel wear using a trial on representative gears.

Suppliers must supply safe work equipment. Ask for batch-linked speed-test evidence, maximum operating speed marking and mounting instructions before supply. HSE guidance says the wheel manufacturer's maximum permissible operating speed must never be exceeded. Arrange testing and certification support where needed.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative trial batch of vitrified gear grinding worm wheels under 6804 22 30 00, invoiced at £2,500 free on board, with £150 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,650. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,650, so it is £530. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Geometry: check bore, mounting faces, diameter, width, runout and threaded profile against the approved drawing.

Condition: check for cracks, chipped thread crests, damaged edges and packing that allows wheels to strike each other.

Identification: check batch traceability, abrasive and bond designation, maximum speed marking and matching test records; check expiry marking for organic bonds.

Trial: check balance and machine fit, then assess dressed profile, gear finish, burn and wear against the approved sample. Plan the checks through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A wheel can fit the spindle but have the wrong thread hand, starts or dressing geometry. Poor runout or balance can leave periodic marks on gear teeth. An unsuitable bond or structure can cause loading, burn or rapid profile loss, even when the wheel looks like the approved sample.

Keep drawing revisions, abrasive specification and dressing conditions attached to the order. Compare production wheels with the accepted trial and separate damaged arrivals for assessment before mounting.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on gear grinding worm wheels from China?

The relevant lines of heading 6804 carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff reading, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures recorded. Confirm the material-based code before shipment.

Which commodity code covers a vitrified worm grinding wheel?

6804 22 30 00 covers artificial abrasive wheels with ceramic or silicate binders. Confirm the actual abrasive and binder rather than classifying from the product name alone.

What should I send the Chinese factory?

Send the machine model, wheel drawing, threaded profile, mounting details, abrasive and bond specification, dressing arrangement, gear material and trial acceptance criteria.

How do I check that a worm grinding wheel works?

Check geometry, condition, identification and speed evidence first. Then run a controlled trial using your dressing process, coolant and representative gears, assessing profile, finish, burn and wear.
