Zero duty on potato harvesters and parts

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 7 October 2026, potato diggers and potato harvesters under 8433 53 10 00 carried 0% duty from China. Parts under 8433 90 00 00 also carried 0%. Neither line recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty, or a suspension. Heading 8433 covers harvesting and other agricultural machinery; this guide focuses on potato harvesting.

The tariff attaches import and export waste controls to the complete-machine line. If a consignment from China is waste subject to notification controls, shipment to England requires consent from the Environment Agency and the other competent authorities involved. Ask your customs broker to confirm the waste-control requirement for the actual goods before shipment.

The machine types in the table share a tariff line; they are purchasing configurations, not separate commodity codes. Confirm the commodity code from the machine specification and classify separately supplied spares individually. For the wider heading, see combine harvesters.

UK duty on these lines for goods of Chinese origin (one code per row), read from the UK Trade Tariff on 7 October 2026.

Match the digging system to the crop and tractor

Specify whether the machine lifts potatoes onto the ground, transfers them to a picking conveyor, or collects them in a hopper. Agree row spacing, digging width and depth, soil conditions, stone separation, haulm handling and discharge arrangements. Describe the potato varieties and handling condition used for acceptance trials.

For mounted or trailed machines, give the factory the tractor linkage, drawbar, power take-off and hydraulic specifications. Agree shaft guarding, hose connections, transport locking and the spare-parts list. Machinery must be safe before being placed on the Great Britain market or put into service. Request the conformity documents, English operating instructions and configuration-specific safety evidence for review through testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 40 compact potato diggers, illustrative order under 8433 53 10 00, invoiced at £28,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £32,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £32,000, so it is £6,400. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Crop handling: trial representative potatoes in agreed soil conditions; record missed tubers, cuts, bruising, soil carry-over and damage at conveyor transfers.

Drive and hydraulics: check shaft fit, guards, hose routing, belt tracking and chain tension; run the digging and discharge mechanisms and check for leaks or overheating.

Structure and access: inspect shares, webs, welds, bearings, hopper supports and transport locks; check access for cleaning and replacement of wearing parts.

Arrival and documents: compare the model and serial identification with the order and supplied documents; inspect freight damage, loose fittings and contamination before a controlled commissioning trial. Arrange quality inspection against the same checklist before dispatch.

What goes wrong

A demonstration on loose, dry soil can conceal poor separation in the buyer's heavier ground. Conveyor gaps, sharp transfers and excessive drop heights can damage potatoes even when the machine lifts them successfully. Put crop handling and separation into the acceptance specification rather than accepting an unloaded demonstration.

A machine can arrive with the wrong tractor connections, inaccessible grease points or wearing parts that cannot be matched locally. Approve connection drawings and spare-part identification before production. For used equipment or machines tested in fields, ask APHA to confirm the plant-health requirements before dispatch and agree cleaning evidence with the supplier.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on potato harvesters from China?

The supplied tariff snapshot records 0% on potato diggers and harvesters under 8433 53 10 00 and parts under 8433 90 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Can a Chinese potato harvester fit my tractor?

Check linkage, drawbar, power take-off and hydraulic compatibility against your tractor specification. Approve connection drawings and test the supplied configuration before dispatch.

How do I check whether a harvester damages potatoes?

Run a crop trial in representative soil. Inspect potatoes after digging, separation and discharge, including bruising that becomes visible after handling.

Does the waste-control entry apply to a new potato harvester?

The tariff attaches the control to the machine code. Ask your customs broker to confirm its application to your goods; waste subject to notification controls needs the relevant authorities' consent before shipment to England.
