Zero duty on beet harvesters and parts

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8433 covers harvesting and related agricultural machinery. Beet-topping machines and beet harvesters fall under 8433 53 30 00. The table also identifies parts and neighbouring root-harvesting lines for comparison; these are not alternative codes for the same beet harvester. For vineyard harvesting equipment, see sourcing grape harvesting machines.

The selected lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures and no suspensions recorded. The complete-machine lines carry import and export waste-control flags; the parts line does not. Waste shipment controls apply only where the material is waste. For a shipment from China, ask your customs broker to confirm the requirement attached to the tariff flag before shipping.

Confirm the commodity code from the machine's actual function and whether the shipment contains a complete harvester or separate parts. See the potato harvesters guide for wider root-harvesting coverage.

UK duty on these lines for goods of Chinese origin (one code per row), read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026.

Specify topping, lifting and cleaning

State whether the machine is trailed or self-propelled, the crop row spacing, lifting arrangement and topping method. For a trailed machine, match the tractor connection, power take-off and hydraulic requirements. Agree the cleaning system, hopper arrangement, unloading reach, transport dimensions and spare lifting shares, knives and conveyor components.

Ask for the exact configuration's declaration of conformity, CE or UKCA marking details, technical-file arrangements and English operating manual. Agree a crop trial that records missed roots, root damage, topping quality and soil carried into the hopper.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: A trailed sugar beet harvester, illustrative order under 8433 53 30 00, invoiced at £28,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £32,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £32,000, so it is £6,400. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Crop handling: trial lifting depth, topping adjustment and cleaning settings with representative beet and soil; inspect roots for cuts, breakage and excessive crown removal.

Drive and hydraulics: check tractor compatibility, hose routing, leaks, conveyor tracking and operation under load.

Safety and documents: inspect guards around shafts, knives and conveyors; test stopping controls and match the machine identity to its declaration and manual.

Arrival and spares: inspect lifting shares, belts, tyres and hydraulic fittings for transport damage; reconcile loose components and spares with the packing list. Plan quality inspection before dispatch and repeat functional checks after assembly.

What goes wrong

A machine can run empty yet lift poorly in the buyer's soil. Incorrect row spacing misses roots; aggressive cleaning damages beet; weak cleaning leaves soil in the hopper. A demonstration using loose roots does not establish field performance. Agree the crop and soil conditions for acceptance before ordering.

Missing guards, inaccessible adjustments, mismatched tractor connections and unavailable wear parts can prevent useful operation. Record the agreed configuration and spare-part identities, and arrange assembly, commissioning and operator familiarisation before shipment.
