Start with the growing or display system

A nursery buying seed trays needs cells and trays to work with its benches, watering and handling. A garden retailer needs pots that look right, arrive intact and remain stable when filled. Send the actual use, material preference, dimensions and handling method instead of asking for a generic garden product catalogue.

Keep empty containers separate from plants, growing media, fertilisers and powered equipment in the brief. Those additions bring different questions that this container checklist does not answer. For an outdoor product, state the expected exposure and the performance claims you intend to make.

Specify what matters after delivery

Obtain drawings and request a sample of the proposed production construction. A photo of an apparently identical pot does not establish wall thickness, drainage or packed dimensions.

Measure the nested pack, not the empty pot

Ask for a drawing or photograph of the actual nested pack with its dimensions. Deep nesting can reduce space but still needs enough separation to prevent scuffing or locking together. For fragile pots, protective packing may remove part of the apparent freight advantage.

Compare units that can be sold after transit, including the agreed allowance for breakage and the remedy for damaged goods. Use the shipping volume calculator with packed carton measurements. Product dimensions alone do not give the shipping volume of a nested or protected consignment.

Approve performance for the stated environment

Trial drainage and stability using representative contents. If the product is sold with frost, weathering or UV-resistance claims, agree what evidence supports those claims for the exact construction. A material family name does not establish the performance of every formulation or finish.

For custom moulded trays or pots, approve the dimensions and release from the mould on production-representative samples. Record mould ownership and which changes require another approval. Our OEM and ODM guide explains why a custom mould is a different commitment from a stock pot.

Seasonal stock is part of the cost

A garden product that arrives after the intended selling season may sit in storage even if the factory price was attractive. Work backwards from the usable delivery date, leaving time to correct a sample and inspect packing. Do not replace a confirmed freight plan with a supplier's informal promise.

For bulky low-value pots in small quantities, local manufacture or UK wholesale stock may be the better comparison. Send the product specification, quantities by size and colour, required packing, intended season, destination and arrival deadline. Confirm factory minimums, tooling, lead time and the full delivered cost before committing.
