Sourcing fibre cement planters from China
Fibre cement planters from China carry 0% UK duty under the asbestos-free other-articles line, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty shown. UK REACH prohibits supplying articles with intentionally added asbestos. Confirm the material, drainage and filled stability before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources fibre cement planters.

Planter classification and UK duty
Heading 6811 covers articles of asbestos-cement, cellulose fibre-cement or similar materials. Asbestos-free fibre cement planters fall within other articles, provisionally 6811 89 00 00. The table illustrates planter shapes sharing that line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions. Check the actual cement and reinforcing-fibre composition before using it.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, all supplied lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The data shows no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. The asbestos-containing line does not authorise imports: UK REACH prohibits placing articles with intentionally added asbestos on the market, which includes import.
Send the material specification, photographs and intended use to your customs broker to confirm the commodity code. A resin planter described as cement-effect needs a fresh classification check. For other products within this heading, see fibre cement garden edging.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Asbestos-free fibre cement round planters | 6811 89 00 00 | 0% | None |
Specify drainage, wall thickness and outdoor use
Specify cement and fibre composition, an asbestos-free requirement, external dimensions, planting depth, wall and base thickness, empty weight, drainage holes and feet. Agree a physical finish sample, including acceptable colour variation and surface texture. State whether the planter is for indoor use, exposed outdoor use or use with a liner.
For outdoor models, ask for evidence supporting frost resistance and coating durability on the proposed material and finish. Agree checks for stability when filled with wet growing medium, base strength and drainage. Consumer planters should only be sold once compliance with product safety regulations has been demonstrated. Keep the specification, sample assessment and supporting reports together.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative palletised order of assorted fibre cement planters for an independent garden shop under 6811 89 00 00, invoiced at £9,000 free on board, with £2,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £11,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £11,500, so it is £2,300. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Material: check the composition declaration and asbestos test report against the ordered product and production batch.
Body: check wall and base thickness, rim cracks, chipped corners, exposed fibres and rocking on a flat surface.
Drainage and finish: check that holes are clear, water escapes as intended, and the coating matches the approved sample without flaking or blistering.
Packing: check rim protection, separators between nested pots and pallet restraint; unpack arrival samples to look for concealed cracks. Agree the checks through quality inspection.

What goes wrong
A planter can look sound while its base or rim is too thin for handling when filled. Blocked drainage leaves water standing; trapped water and an unsuitable outdoor formulation can lead to cracking. Coatings can blister, and pale deposits can spoil dark finishes. Inspect the base and drainage rather than accepting appearance alone.
Tightly nested pots can jam or chip each other during unloading. Agree separators and a safe unpacking method with the factory, then inspect incoming stock before distributing it. An asbestos-free declaration should be supported by a relevant laboratory report rather than a generic report for a different product.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on fibre cement planters from China?
The supplied tariff data shows 0% duty under 6811 89 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm that the planter is asbestos-free fibre cement and that the code matches its composition.
Can fibre cement planters containing asbestos be imported?
Before importing new planters with intentionally added asbestos for sale in Great Britain, confirm applicable UK REACH restrictions with HSE. Placing on the market includes import.
Are fibre cement planters suitable for outdoor use?
Specify outdoor use and ask for evidence covering frost resistance and coating durability for the actual formulation. Check drainage and stability with wet growing medium; appearance alone does not establish suitability.
What should I check when fibre cement planters arrive?
Check rims, corners and bases for cracks, compare wall thickness and finish with the agreed sample, test drainage and look for rocking. Inspect nested pots for concealed chips and damage from packing pressure.
