Sourcing seed-sowing drones from China
Seed-sowing drones from China carry 0% UK duty across the selected weight and flight-mode lines, with no recorded trade remedies. Releasing seed is outside the open flight category, so confirm the operating permission before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources seed-sowing drones.

Duty and classification for seed-sowing drones
Heading 8806 covers unmanned aircraft, including complete seed-sowing drones. The selected civil-use lines distinguish aircraft for remote-controlled flight only from other aircraft, then divide them by maximum take-off weight. These are classification candidates, not a single code for every seed-sowing model.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 6 October 2026, the selected lines carried 0% duty for goods from China, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no listed suspensions. The tariff attaches a cultural-goods export-licence entry to these lines. Government guidance states that cultural-goods imports into Great Britain have no licensing requirement under that scheme; ask your customs broker to confirm how the attached entry applies to your declaration.
Give your broker the manufacturer's maximum take-off weight, flight-control description and complete kit contents, then confirm the commodity code. Some other lines in this heading attach fluorinated greenhouse gas import controls; if a different line is proposed, have your broker confirm the requirement. The agricultural spraying drone guide covers the related product family.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Civil drones for remote-controlled flight only, take-off weight over 7 kg up to 25 kg | 8806 23 00 10 | 0% | None |
| Civil drones for remote-controlled flight only, take-off weight over 25 kg up to 150 kg | 8806 24 00 10 | 0% | None |
| Other civil drones, take-off weight over 7 kg up to 25 kg | 8806 93 00 10 | 0% | None |

Specify the seed hopper and metering system
Name the seed species, size range, coating and bulk density for the factory trial. Specify usable hopper capacity, payload, outlet adjustment, agitator, spreading disc, shut-off behaviour and cleaning access. Request collected-seed measurements across the swath, with flight speed, height and settings recorded. A fertiliser demonstration does not establish performance with your seed.
Open-category flight rules do not allow dropping material, so releasing seed falls outside that category. Confirm the operating permission with the Civil Aviation Authority before ordering or arranging a sowing demonstration. For radio equipment within scope, importers must ensure the essential requirements are met before sale in Great Britain. Request model-specific radio evidence, battery transport test evidence and a clear operating manual.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative trial order: a seed-sowing drone with hopper, controller, batteries and charger under 8806 94 00 10, invoiced at £15,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £15,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £15,800, so it is £3,160. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Metering: run your nominated seed through the hopper on a secured ground rig; compare collected output at different settings and hopper fill levels, and check bridging, crushed seed and leakage after shut-off.
Spread pattern: collect seed across the working swath during an appropriately authorised demonstration; compare distribution, overlap and delivery through turns against the agreed acceptance specification.
Airframe and power: inspect hopper mounts, folding-arm locks, propellers, battery housings and connectors; compare loaded flight logs and return-to-home behaviour with the approved sample.
Documents and kit: match model, serial identification, firmware, radio reports and battery evidence to the delivered aircraft; check controller, charger, spare metering parts and cleaning instructions. Use the inspection guide to define the checks before shipment.

What goes wrong
Light or irregular seed can bridge above the outlet, while aggressive agitation can damage seed coatings. Metering may change as the hopper empties, and a wide advertised swath may hide uneven deposition. Require trials with your seed and retain the settings and collection records for arrival checks.
Empty-aircraft demonstrations can hide weak hopper mounts, short loaded endurance or unstable behaviour as the payload changes. Firmware changes can also alter spreader control or return-to-home behaviour. Agree the tested configuration, replacement parts and acceptance evidence before shipment; keep seed-release permission separate from customs clearance.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on seed-sowing drones from China?
The selected civil-use lines in heading 8806 carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no listed suspensions.
Can I sow seed under the open drone category?
No. Open-category flight rules do not allow dropping material. Confirm the operating permission with the Civil Aviation Authority before a seed-release flight.
Can a spraying drone also sow seed?
Check the actual hopper, metering drive, spreader controls and supported firmware. Ask for a trial with your seed; a liquid spraying demonstration does not prove seed delivery.
What should I ask the Chinese factory to test?
Seed flow, bridging, coating damage, shut-off leakage, spread pattern and loaded flight behaviour. Record the seed used, hopper fill level, settings and aircraft configuration.
