Sourcing facade-cleaning drones from China

Facade-cleaning drones from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant weight bands, with no recorded trade remedies. Before sale in Great Britain, importers must check that the manufacturer has completed the radio conformity assessment. Confirm the proposed spraying operation with the aviation regulator before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources facade-cleaning drones.

Zero duty on the relevant drone lines

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 6 October 2026, heading 8806 covers unmanned aircraft. The relevant civil drone lines carry 0% duty on goods from China, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no listed suspensions. Classification distinguishes aircraft for remote-controlled flight only from other aircraft and separates maximum take-off weight bands.

The supplied tariff record attaches a DCMS Export Licence entry to the selected lines. Official guidance concerns exports of cultural objects from Great Britain; ask your customs broker to confirm how the recorded entry affects your declaration. Some other heading lines also carry fluorinated greenhouse gas import controls. If classification leads to such a line, confirm the requirement with your broker using the factory's gas-content information.

Provide the flight-control description, maximum take-off weight and complete packing list to confirm the commodity code. Ask the broker how to classify any separately supplied ground pump, hose and spare batteries. For the wider drone family, see tethered inspection drones.

Specify the cleaning system and hose loads

Specify the facade material, cleaning liquid, nozzle pattern, working pressure and flow at the nozzle. Agree the hose length, filled-hose load, attachment position, ground pump, filtration and power supply. Request evidence of stable positioning while spraying with the proposed hose arrangement, rather than relying on unloaded flight footage.

For radio equipment sold in Great Britain, the importer must ensure the manufacturer has completed the relevant conformity assessment. Request radio reports matching the supplied controller, aircraft and firmware, plus battery transport test summaries. Include English operating instructions, maintenance procedures and spare-part identification in your purchasing specification.

Before ordering, send the proposed aircraft, tether arrangement, spray method and working site to the Civil Aviation Authority for advice on the operating route. Agree how demonstrations will be arranged, including hose handling, loss of signal, pump shutdown and recovery without dragging the aircraft towards the wall.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: a facade-cleaning drone kit with ground pump and hose under 8806 23 00 10, invoiced at £15,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £15,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £15,800, so it is £3,160. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match aircraft, controller, pump and battery identifiers to the approved specification and supplied reports.

Water circuit: inspect hose fittings, seals, filters and nozzle mounting; test for leaks and confirm pressure and spray pattern with the agreed hose.

Flight integration: arrange a controlled demonstration of positioning, hose handling and recovery with the cleaning equipment fitted; compare the results with the agreed acceptance criteria.

Arrival condition: check propellers, arms, connectors and battery condition after unpacking; record damage before assembly. Use the inspection guide to plan sampling.

What goes wrong

A drone demonstrated without its hose can behave differently when the filled hose pulls sideways. Pressure losses can leave an uneven spray, poorly positioned nozzles can wet connectors, and incompatible fittings can leak. Check these failure modes with the actual pump, hose and cleaning liquid before accepting the system.

A generic radio report may describe different hardware or firmware, while a cleaning demonstration may use a different wall finish from yours. Match documents to the supplied configuration and agree a representative surface trial. Keep glass, coated metal and porous masonry trials separate when assessing staining, streaking and surface damage.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on facade-cleaning drones from China?

The relevant heading 8806 civil drone lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff record, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no listed suspensions.

Which commodity code covers a facade-cleaning drone?

It depends on maximum take-off weight and whether the aircraft is for remote-controlled flight only. Give your broker the flight-control specification and packing list before choosing a code.

Can I use a tethered drone to spray a building?

Ask the Civil Aviation Authority to assess the proposed aircraft, tether, spraying method and site before ordering. Describe the actual cleaning operation rather than an inspection-only flight.

What should I ask the Chinese factory to demonstrate?

Stable positioning with the filled hose attached, nozzle pressure and spray pattern, leak control, pump shutdown and recovery. Use the intended pump and a representative facade surface.
