Sourcing tethered inspection drones from China

Tethered inspection drones from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant weight and flight-control lines, with no recorded trade remedies. A tether does not remove all flight obligations: registration and competency requirements also apply to tethered small aircraft. Cambridge China Bridge sources tethered inspection drones.

Zero duty on relevant drone lines

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 6 October 2026, the relevant heading 8806 lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions. The heading covers unmanned aircraft. These rows are candidate classifications for complete tethered inspection drones, depending on maximum take-off weight, flight-control capability and integrated camera configuration. See the wider drones and aircraft guide.

The supplied tariff records attach a cultural export licence label to these rows. Official guidance concerns exporting objects of cultural interest from Great Britain; ask your customs broker to confirm the declaration treatment for new Chinese drones. Fluorinated greenhouse gas import controls appear on other heading lines. Pre-charged equipment can sit within another product; if your configuration changes, ask the broker to confirm whether that control applies.

Give your broker the aircraft datasheet, maximum take-off weight, camera details, flight modes and complete shipment contents. A tether alone does not identify the correct row. Confirm the commodity code, including separately supplied ground equipment and spares. Allow for 20% import VAT and use the duty and VAT guide when preparing the landed-cost calculation.

Specify the aircraft, tether and ground station together

Define the inspection task, camera view, thermal imaging needs, payload, maximum take-off weight and whether the aircraft only flies under remote control. Specify usable tether length, cable mass, attachment points, reel tension, snag management and ground anchorage. Ask for a demonstration with the intended payload and deployed cable, rather than accepting an untethered flight demonstration.

Specify the ground power input, connector locking, cooling, backup battery and behaviour after power or communications loss. Registration and competency requirements also apply to tethered small aircraft, so confirm the intended operating arrangement before ordering. Where radio equipment rules apply, the importer must ensure conformity with essential requirements before placing equipment on the Great Britain market. Request model-specific supporting evidence through testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative pair of tethered inspection camera drones with ground power units and reels under 8806 22 10 00, invoiced at £15,000 free on board, with £800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £15,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £15,800, so it is £3,160. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Tether and reel: inspect the cable jacket, strain relief and locked connectors; check payout, retrieval and tension against the agreed specification. Look for rubbing, kinks and uneven winding.

Power and recovery: check the supplied ground unit and backup battery match the approved sample. Have the supplier demonstrate the agreed response to interrupted power and communications in a controlled test.

Imaging and control: check live view, recording, gimbal movement and inspection detail with the intended payload. Confirm that firmware, controller and camera match the model demonstrated before ordering.

Identity and packing: match aircraft, ground station and reel identifiers to the packing list and supporting documents. Check battery condition, cable protection, spare connectors and operating instructions. Plan sampling with the inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A drone can perform well without its tether but struggle once cable weight and reel tension are added. Poor winding can snag the cable, connectors can loosen, and a ground power unit can overheat during extended operation. A camera may transmit a clear live image while saved inspection footage lacks the required detail.

Agree acceptance checks for the complete system and retain the approved sample configuration. Treat claims that tethering removes all flight obligations with caution: tethered small aircraft still have registration and competency requirements. Ask the supplier to explain how each failure mode is handled and demonstrate recovery before accepting the shipment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on tethered inspection drones from China?

The relevant heading 8806 lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff records, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions. Import VAT is normally 20%.

Does a tether exempt an inspection drone from flight rules?

A tether does not remove all obligations. Official legislative notes confirm that registration and competency requirements also apply to tethered small aircraft. Confirm the rules for the intended aircraft and operation.

Which commodity code covers a tethered inspection drone?

Check maximum take-off weight, remote-only versus other flight capability and integrated camera configuration. Give the broker the complete specification; the tether alone does not identify the code.

What should I test before accepting a tethered drone?

Test the aircraft with its intended payload, deployed cable, reel and ground supply. Check tension, connector security, recorded image detail and the agreed response to power or communications loss.
