Sourcing nickel-zinc batteries from China
Nickel-zinc rechargeable batteries from China fall within other accumulators at 0% UK duty; separately imported battery parts carry 2% before any applicable suspension. Batteries must meet marking rules; confirm applicable substance restrictions with the relevant authority. Cambridge China Bridge sources nickel-zinc rechargeable batteries.

Duty on nickel-zinc batteries and parts
Heading 8507 covers electric accumulators and their separators. Nickel-zinc rechargeable batteries belong within other accumulators, rather than the nickel-metal hydride line. The table includes the finished battery line and separately imported components. For the wider heading, see rechargeable battery cells. For another battery chemistry, see our sodium-ion battery sourcing guide. For flow batteries, see our vanadium flow battery sourcing guide. For another rechargeable chemistry, see our guide to sourcing silver-zinc batteries.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, other accumulators under 8507 80 00 90 carried 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. The listed parts carried 2%, with suspensions restricted to named products. Do not assume these cover nickel-zinc components. The tariff attaches mercury import and export controls to the battery line, and mercury export controls to the parts lines.
Mercury controls concern products with intentionally added mercury. Confirm with the relevant authority whether the applicable mercury rules prohibit importing the exact products into Great Britain. Obtain a composition declaration and ask your customs broker to confirm whether the attached control affects the exact goods from China. Confirm the commodity code using the chemistry, construction and whether you are importing complete batteries or parts.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other accumulators, including nickel-zinc rechargeable batteries | 8507 80 00 90 | 0% | None |
| Battery separators of plastic film not exceeding 40 micrometres | 8507 90 31 90 | 2% | None |
| Other battery separators | 8507 90 39 90 | 2% | None |
| Other battery parts | 8507 90 80 90 | 2% | None |
Specify the cell and its charger together
Specify nickel-zinc chemistry explicitly, together with the cell maker, model, dimensions, terminal shape, capacity test method, discharge conditions and intended equipment. Agree the charging method, charge termination and permitted operating conditions with the manufacturer. Ask for test results for the exact cell and charger combination rather than accepting a report for another rechargeable chemistry.
For Great Britain, confirm applicable mercury restrictions, portable-battery cadmium restrictions and any exceptions with the relevant authority. Batteries generally need the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol. Approve the artwork against the battery marking rules before production. If you have a UK business presence and first make the batteries available on the UK market, confirm your battery producer status under waste battery rules with the relevant authority.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 2000 nickel-zinc rechargeable cells under 8507 80 00 90, invoiced at £1,000 free on board, with £200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £1,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £1,200, so it is £240. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match the chemistry, maker, model and batch identification to the approved sample and purchase specification.
Performance: measure capacity using the agreed discharge conditions, compare internal resistance across samples and repeat charging with the specified charger.
Condition: check for leakage, corrosion, damaged sleeves, loose terminals and dimensional differences that prevent correct seating.
Marking and packing: check the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol, readable capacity information, polarity and batch traceability; inspect packing for terminal contact and transport damage.

What goes wrong
A cell can fit the holder but fail the intended application. Treat compatibility as a test question: run the approved cell and charger in the actual equipment, checking charging behaviour, heat and usable runtime. Do not accept a change of chemistry or cell source without repeating that assessment.
Capacity claims are difficult to compare when discharge conditions differ. Put the test method and acceptance criteria in the order, retain reference samples and quarantine leaking or inconsistent batches. A sample report does not establish the condition of the delivered lot. Use quality inspection to plan checks before shipment and on arrival.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on nickel-zinc batteries from China?
Other accumulators under 8507 80 00 90 carried 0% duty in the supplied tariff reading, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Separately imported battery parts generally carried 2% before any applicable suspension.
Can I use a nickel-metal hydride charger?
Ask the cell manufacturer to approve the exact charger and charging method. Test that combination before ordering; a matching cell shape does not establish charging compatibility.
Do nickel-zinc batteries need a recycling symbol?
Batteries generally require the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol. For small batteries, confirm any packaging provisions with the relevant authority. Check the artwork against the applicable marking rules before production.
Am I the battery producer if I import the cells?
If you have a UK business presence and are the first in your selling chain to make the batteries available for supply or sale on the UK market, confirm your battery producer status with the relevant authority. Establish the battery category before importing.
