Sourcing sodium-ion batteries from China

Sodium-ion batteries should be checked against other accumulators under heading 8507: the supplied line carries 0% UK duty from China, while battery parts carry 2%. Battery marking and producer responsibilities still apply. Confirm chemistry, classification and pack protection before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources sodium-ion batteries.

Duty on sodium-ion batteries and parts

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 8507 covers electric accumulators and their separators. The supplied other-accumulator line, 8507 80 00 90, carries 0% duty from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension. Treat this as a classification candidate for sodium-ion cells and packs, rather than using a lithium-ion description.

The separator and other-parts lines in the table carry 2%. Their suspensions are restricted to named products; do not assume sodium-ion parts qualify. The supplied other-parts suspension wording includes an apparently unrelated product description, so ask your customs broker to verify it. The other-accumulator line attaches mercury import and export controls. Controls concern intentionally added mercury; ask for a composition declaration and have your broker confirm the import requirement.

Confirm the commodity code using the chemistry, construction and whether you are importing cells, complete packs or separate parts. The parts rows are purchasing categories, not additional sodium-ion battery codes. For the wider heading, see lithium batteries and battery packs. For flow batteries, see our vanadium flow battery sourcing guide. For silver-zinc purchases, see our rechargeable silver-zinc battery sourcing guide.

Specify the sodium-ion cell and charging profile

Name the cell manufacturer, cell model and electrode chemistry. Specify usable capacity at an agreed discharge current and temperature, operating voltage range, charging profile, current limits and storage conditions. For packs, agree enclosure dimensions, connectors, polarity, protection settings and communication with the intended charger or inverter. Ask for test results for the exact sodium-ion design.

For Great Britain, batteries must generally carry the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol; confirm the applicable substance restrictions with the relevant authority. Approve the label artwork and composition evidence before production. A business with a UK presence that first makes imported batteries available on the UK market is a battery producer. Establish the battery category and registration route before selling. Check the applicable battery market rules separately with the relevant authority for Northern Ireland.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 200 sodium-ion battery packs, subject to classification under 8507 80 00 90, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £12,600. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £12,600, so it is £2,520. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match cell and pack models, batch records and chemistry declarations to the approved specification; record any substitution.

Performance: measure usable capacity under the agreed conditions, internal resistance and cell voltage balance; compare bulk samples with the approved sample.

Protection: have a suitable test facility check charging limits, temperature protection and fault response against the agreed pack specification; verify charger and inverter communication.

Arrival: check for swelling, leakage, damaged terminals and crushed packaging; compare labels and supplied instructions with approved artwork. Use quality inspection to agree the sampling and acceptance plan.

What goes wrong

A capacity claim without a discharge current, temperature and cut-off voltage gives you no agreed acceptance test. A pack can also fit mechanically while its charging profile or communication is incompatible with the intended equipment. Require evidence from the proposed pairing and prohibit unapproved cell or firmware changes in the purchase specification.

A lithium-ion report does not establish the performance of a sodium-ion model. Ask the forwarder to assess the exact chemistry and shipping configuration before booking, and obtain its document and packaging instructions. Keep damaged arrivals out of use while you arrange assessment; agree the returns process and replacement responsibility before shipment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on sodium-ion batteries from China?

The supplied other-accumulator line, 8507 80 00 90, carries 0%, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm that your sodium-ion battery belongs there. The selected battery-parts lines carry 2%.

Can I use a lithium-ion charger with a sodium-ion pack?

Do not assume compatibility. Match the charger's output and charging profile to the cell specification and pack protection settings, then test the proposed pairing.

Am I a battery producer if I import sodium-ion batteries?

Yes, if you have a UK business presence and are first in the selling chain to make the batteries available on the UK market. The registration route depends on battery category and quantity.

What should I ask a sodium-ion battery factory for?

Ask for the cell maker and model, chemistry declaration, capacity test conditions, charging limits, pack protection settings, batch traceability and test evidence matching the supplied design.
