Sourcing industrial NiCd batteries from China

Industrial nickel-cadmium batteries from China pay 0% UK duty; separately imported parts generally pay 2%. Confirm genuine industrial classification before relying on the cadmium exception, and plan battery producer responsibilities before sale. Cambridge China Bridge sources industrial nickel-cadmium batteries.

Duty on industrial nickel-cadmium batteries

Heading 8507 covers electric accumulators and their separators and parts. Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, hermetically sealed and other nickel-cadmium accumulators from China both carried 0% duty. Neither nickel-cadmium line showed anti-dumping or countervailing duty, or a suspension. Separately imported separators and other parts in the table carry 2%; their recorded suspensions are restricted to specified goods, so do not assume a battery spare qualifies.

The supplied tariff record attaches an export control of mercury to these lines. Its wording concerns exports of mercury compounds and mixtures. Confirm its relevance to your consignment with your customs broker rather than treating it as an import permission or a blanket battery prohibition.

Confirm the commodity code using the chemistry, sealing construction and whether the shipment contains complete batteries or separate parts. For the wider rechargeable battery heading, see nickel-metal hydride battery cells.

Specify the cell construction and discharge duty

Specify hermetically sealed or vented construction, cell model, rated capacity, discharge current, end voltage, operating temperature and charging regime. Agree the capacity test conditions in writing. Record terminal layout, polarity, mounting dimensions, connector material and any inter-cell links. For vented cells, specify the supplied electrolyte condition, filling instructions and maintenance information.

Keep model-specific evidence of industrial classification. Official guidance says simply calling a battery industrial in manufacturer literature is insufficient. In Great Britain, industrial batteries fall within the cadmium exception when appropriately marked with the cadmium chemical symbol; confirm applicable mercury restrictions with the Office for Product Safety and Standards. Batteries generally need the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol. Confirm the applicable battery market rules separately if supplying Northern Ireland.

A UK-established importer first making batteries available on the UK market is usually the battery producer. Industrial producers must register with the Office for Product Safety and Standards within 28 days and report tonnage, chemistry and brand by 31 March in the following year. They must take back waste industrial batteries under the stated conditions, free of charge. Plan these duties alongside the purchase.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 200 vented industrial nickel-cadmium cells; values are illustrative, not a quotation under 8507 30 80 90, invoiced at £4,000 free on board, with £200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £4,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £4,200, so it is £840. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the cell maker, model, chemistry, batch identification and construction to the approved specification; check disposal and chemical markings against the approved artwork.

Performance: sample-test capacity using the agreed discharge current, temperature and end voltage; record individual cell results rather than accepting a pack voltage reading alone.

Connections: check terminal polarity, dimensions, threads, supplied links and rack fit against the installation drawing.

Condition: inspect cases, seals and vents for damage or leakage on arrival; reconcile electrolyte supplies and instructions with the order. Use the inspection guide to agree checks before dispatch.

What goes wrong

A supplier may quote capacity measured under conditions that differ from your equipment's discharge duty. A battery can then show the expected voltage yet fail the required operating duration. Terminal changes, missing links and the wrong charging instructions can also prevent installation. Approve a sample against the actual load and charger before ordering the production batch.

Industrial classification is another failure point: a supplier's description alone does not establish it. Confirm the category and marking artwork before production, and arrange waste battery returns before selling. Keep shipment records and test results linked to the delivered batch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on industrial nickel-cadmium batteries from China?

Both nickel-cadmium lines in the supplied tariff record carry 0% duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Separately imported separators and other parts in the table carry 2% before any qualifying suspension.

Are industrial nickel-cadmium batteries banned in Great Britain?

Industrial batteries fall within the cadmium exception when marked appropriately. Confirm the industrial category; portable battery restrictions differ. Confirm applicable mercury limits with the Office for Product Safety and Standards, and follow the battery marking rules.

Does importing industrial batteries make me a battery producer?

If you have a UK business presence and first make them available on the UK market, confirm your producer status with the Office for Product Safety and Standards. Industrial producers have registration, reporting and conditional free take-back duties.

How do I check the capacity of a Chinese nickel-cadmium battery?

Agree the discharge current, temperature and end voltage before purchase. Test samples under those conditions and retain cell-level results matched to the batch and model.
