Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 27 September 2026, industrial or laboratory furnaces and ovens, including incinerators, non-electric, heading 8417, carried 0% on goods from China on all seven lines, including parts, with no anti-dumping measure.

Electric furnaces and ovens are classified under heading 8514, and the burners on their own under 8416 (see our industrial burners guide). Bakery machinery other than ovens is covered in our bakery and food machinery guide.

Safety rules

Furnaces placed on the UK market must meet the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008, with a declaration of conformity, marking and instructions in English. The BS EN 746 series covers industrial thermoprocessing equipment, with part 1 for common requirements and part 2 for combustion and fuel handling systems.

Incinerators and some furnaces also need environmental permits for their emissions at the site, which the operator arranges, so check the emission performance before ordering.

Specifying a furnace

Specify process and product, working chamber size, maximum and working temperature, temperature uniformity, heating rate, atmosphere, fuel and burner system, refractory and insulation type, controls and data logging, emissions, loading and handling, voltage and supply, and the installation and commissioning package.

Worked duty example

An invented example rather than a quote: one gas-fired shuttle kiln for ceramics, commodity code 8417 80 30 00, bought for £72,000 free on board, with £6,500 of freight and insurance, so £78,500 is the value customs works from. No duty is due on ceramic kilns; import VAT at 20% of £78,500 is £15,700. If you are VAT-registered, that VAT is normally reclaimable. See calculating UK import duty and VAT for the method.

Inspection checklist

Combustion safety: check the burner management system, flame supervision, purge and safety shut-off valves against BS EN 746-2, and test every emergency stop.

Build: check refractory and insulation thickness and material certificates against the drawings, check steel casing welds and door seals, and check thermocouple positions.

Performance and documents: where possible fire the furnace at the factory and record heat-up time and temperature uniformity, and check the declaration of conformity, English manuals, wiring and gas train diagrams and spares list.

What goes wrong

Furnaces fail on temperature uniformity, refractory and combustion controls. Hot and cold spots spoil product, refractory cracks or spalls after a few firings, burner controls do not meet UK safety expectations, and energy use exceeds the quote.

Agree uniformity and energy figures with a test method, check refractory specifications, and plan commissioning with a UK engineer. See our quality inspection guide.
